| Purpose To determine the prevalence of floppy eyelid syndrome in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and study the correlation between eyelid hyperlaxity and sleep disorder, to investigate the ocular surface changes in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. Methods The 44 patients refered to the respiratory department of the second affiliated hospital of FuJian Mecical University during Oct,2006 to Mar,2007 and were diagnosed to have OSAHS were included in our study. Examination list including polysomnography, eyelid laxity, tear break up time, schirmer's test, and cornea fluorescein staining.Analyze the data of polysomnography, record the data of the following paramters age, sex, body mass index(BMI),percentage of REM during sleep, time of SaO2<90%,et al.Results (1) In 44 patients who were found to have OSAHS, 38 were male and 6 were female, ages ranging from 6 to 79 years, with a mean of 44.1±15.1 years,BMI ranging from 15.18 to 38.63Kg/m2 with a mena of 28±5 Kg/m2, 36 patients were obese (81.8%,BMI≥25 Kg/m2), 27 patients were found to have floppy eyelid, slight in 22 patients, mild in 5 patients, no severe floppy eyelid were detected ;2 patients were diagnosed to have FES yielding a prevalence of 4.5%.BUT were abnormal in 40 patients with a mean of 3.5±3.3s. Sit are abnormal in 24 patients.Cornea stains positively in 17 ones. One patient had ptosis. None of the patients reported a history of nocturnal eyelid eversion. (2) AHI was found to be associated with BMI.(3) AHI in patients with floppy eyelid was significantly higher than that in ones without floppy eyelid.BMI differed significantly between the 2 groups too. There was no significant difference in percentage of REM during sleep or time of SaO2<90% between the 2 groups.Eyelid hyperlaxity was associated with AHI and BMI,and when adjusted for age and BMI,there was also association between Eyelid hyperlaxity and AHI(linear regression;P=0.021).(4)sit,cornea fluorescein staining and BUT was not sinificantly different between patients with and without floppy eyelid. But there was a high prevalence of dry eye in OSAHS.Conclusion Floppy eyelid was common in OSAHS patients, and there was correlation between them.Obesity is the common feature in patients OSAHS and FES,researches on leptin and dysfunction of lip metabolism will profit to reveal the mechanisms of these two deseases. Dry eye have a high prevalence in OSAHS patients, but the patients had symptoms seldom. We sopposed this may be related to the abnormality of corneal sensitivity. |
