| Objective To investigate the relationship between metabolicsyndrome and the prevalence of post-stroke depression (PSD), so as toprovide the theoretical reasons for the precaution and therapy ofpost-stroke depression. Methods Consecutive 75 inpatients with the first acute stroke fromthe neurology department of the affiliated hospital of Kunming medicalcollege, were collected from during August 2006 to November 2006. Amongthem, 59 patients were cerebral infarction and 16 patients were cerebralhemorrhage. According to the standards of metabolic syndrome from theChinese Medical Association for diabetes institute, all the patients weredivided into two groups, one group of the 25 patients affected bymetabolic syndrome and the other group of 50 patients not affected bymetabolic syndrome. The depressions of all the patients were measuredafter 3 weeks and 3 months by CCMD-3, SDS and HAMD to find out the incidencerate and the PSD change of the two groups. Results Compared with those without the metabolic syndrome, thepatients who had metabolic syndrome suffered more from PSD. the incidencerates of PSD of the two groups in three weeks were 68.0%and 36.0%, and,the incidence rates after three months were 72.0%and 44.0%. There is asignificant statistical difference of the incidence rate between the twogroups (p<0.05); there is not a generally higher score of the metabolicsyndrome group in three weeks and after three months. The scores betweenthe two groups in three weeks and after three months do not have a statistical difference (p>0.05).Conclusions These findings suggest the metabolic syndromecontributes to occurrence of PSD in stroke patients, but do not aggravatethe degree of PSD. |
