| The attitude of Taoism (daojiao) towards a person's life is one of deep concern. The purpose of the Chinese medicine also focuses on making people healthy in order to prolong their lifespan. Viewed from this perspective, Chinese medicine and Taoism have important commonalities. Throughout Chinese history, many famous Chinese medical doctors have also been Taoist priests. Within Chinese medical books, one finds particular ideas that parallel those of Taoism. This article provides a general account of some core Taoist ideas concerning "nourishing life" (yangsheng) ideas in the Beiji qianjin yaofang, which is one of the most famous medical books in Chinese history. This article examines that work with respect to the Taoist emphasis on nourishing life.First, this article focuses on the principles of yangsheng as documented in the Beiji qianjin yaofang, a text attributed to Sun Simiao. The text contains various references to "spirit immortality" {shenxian) and "prolonging life" (changsheng), which evidence more influence from Taoist religious concerns than Chinese medicine as conventional understood. As a doctor who was deeply influenced by Taoism, Sun Simiao pursues the Taoist ideal of spirit immortality. The present article clarifies several basic health principles that are documented in the text's section on nourishing life. These include "amassing virtue and practicing good deeds" {fide xingshan), "being carefree and decreasing desires" {tiantan guayu), and "following the seasons and absorbing nourishment" {shunshi sheyang). These principles, which are directly related to Taoist views, are intended as guidelines for yangsheng practice.Second, this article investigates nourishing life through one's diet, again as documented in the Beiji qianjin yaofang. There is a Taoist tradition of nourishing life through diet; here one's daily diet is a central concern among many Taoists. In the case of the Beiji qianjin yaofang. Sun Simiao places great emphasis on diet and dietetics. He claims that is necessary to regulate one's diet because this is a foundation of health and longevity. One may maintain the health of one's body by balancing yin and yang. in contrast, the body will become ill when yin and yang are imbalanced Chinese medicine has the ability to bring the body's yin and yang into balance again However, ideally speaking, humans should avoid using medicine because of its side-effects. Mild food cures should be the preferred treatment method. If the imbalance in question can be cured through diet, this is the best choice. This text in turn introduces the following principles for nourishing life: thrift and moderation, curing the five diseases by using the five flavors, and eating specific foods according to different seasons.Third, this article introduces the yangsheng views concerning sexual therapy. Sexual therapy is sometimes used as a Taoist nourishing life technique; the bedroom arts (fangzhong shu) together with "ingesting materials" (fuer) and "circulating qi" (xingqi), are called the three yangsheng lineages. The text emphasizes the necessity of teaching sexual life techniques as contained therein. It then introduces the fundamental principle of controlling sexual desire and regulating sexual activity based on one's age. Here it should be noted that in the Beiji qianjin yaofang sexual knowledge and practice are specific kinds of therapy, which are distinguishable from mundane sexual life. Finally, this article gives attention the important of a positive attitude in one's daily life. Nourishing life is not complicated; instead, it should be part of one's daily life. There are three divisions in this section of the text, including clothing, sleeping and bathing. The clothing division mainly discusses the psychology of wearing clothes; it also emphasizes that people should immediately change out of clothes that are wet. In the sleeping section, the text discusses beneficial characteristics for one's bedroom as well as some dimensions of sleeping. These include the position of one's bed, the overall sleeping environment, and good sleeping habits. In the bathing section, the text provides information on bathing schedules (how often one should bathe), the temperature of the bath, the relationship with hunger, and the quality of bathing water. In sum, there are many important Taoist theories in the yangsheng sections of Beiji qianjin yaofang. We can conclude that the text is influenced deeply by Taoist religious tradition. We can consider this work to be an important example of the relationship between Taoism and science. |
