Objective To investigate the risk factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Baishiqiao community of Urumuqi in Xinjiang. Methods we conducted a case-control study in 2005. we asked for the age, nationality, date of birth ,other general information and examinated body height, body mass, head circumference, abdominal circumference and blood pressure. Moreover,we taken suction the blood of peripheral vein for all residents(age≥50) in the community. Then we screened for demention by MMSE and scrutinized the person who got the score of MMSE for illiteracy (≤17) , elementary school (<20) ,middle school and above it (<24) by HIS and ADL. Finally, 44 AD cases were diagnosed by standard of NINCDS-ADRDA and 44 controls were selected and matched for age , nationality and gender. Univariate and multivariate analysis were conducted using Logistic regression mode. Results In univariate analysis, education, smoking and blood glucose were statistically different between two groups (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that illiteracy increased the risk of AD with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 4. 097 (1. 663-10. 097),smoking decreased the risk of AD with OR and 95%CI: 0. 225, (0. 059-0. 858) . Conclusion The study demonstrated that illiteracy is a risk factor for AD, Smoking is a related risk factor for AD.
