Objective To evaluate the clinical therapeutic effect, side effect and factors associated with therapeutic effect in 131I treatment of Graves'hyperthyroidism. Methods Three hundred patients with Graves'disease underwent 131I treatment. The mean duration of follow-up was 2 years. Patients were divided into 4 groups on therapeutic effect: curing group, partly curing group, hypothyroidism group and inefficacy group. The relation between therapeutic effect and age, gender, course of disease, weight of thyroid gland before treatment, the ratio of 131I uptake rate of 4h to 24h,the maximal 131I uptake rate,131I absorption dose per gram thyroid gland tissue, total accumulative 131I amount, and medical drug treatment were analyzed. Clinical data in patients with hypothyroidism and without hypothyroidism were compared. The factors related with hypothyroidism were searched. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS version 11.5. Quantitative data were compared by means of t test. Qualitative data were compared by means of the χ2 test. Results Among 300 patients, 138 patients (46%) were cured. 69 patients (23%) developed hypothyroidism including 7 patients with late hypothyroidism. 86 patients(28.7%) were improved. 7 patients(2.3%) were ineffective. Total effect rate was 97.7%. Therapeutic effect was related with 131I absorption dose per gram thyroid gland tissue and maximal 131I radioiodine uptake rate(P value is 0.002 ,0.04 , respectively.); hypothyroidism was related with TGA (P=0.012). Conclusion 131I treatment of Graves'hyperthyroidism is effective, less expensive and relative safe. This method may be alternatively treat as first choice. 131I treatment dose should be individually adjusted.
