Objective: To investigate the expression of α -catenin , β -catenin , E-cadherin , c-myc in transitional cell carcinoma of bladder (BTCC); To improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of BTCC and assess the prognostic effect of the expression of these molecules in bladder carcinoma. Methods: To study the expression of α -catenin, β -catenin, E-cadherin , c-myc protein in 54 case of paratfin-embedded BTCC tissue and in 11 normal tissues by immunohistochemical method S-P. The expression of α -catenin , β -catenin , E-cadherin , c-myc were compared with the pathological guade, clinical stage and recurrent of BTCC. Results: (1) Expression of α -catenin, β -catenin , E-cadherin is 100% in 11 normal tissue and 16 cases (29.6%). 10 cases ( 18.5%), 14cases( 25.9%) respectively in 54 BTCC. No case of c-myc expression was observed in 11 normal bladder tissue,38 cases (70.4%) of c-myc expression was observed in 54 BTCC. These difference are significant (p<0.01).(2)The expression of α -catenin, β -catenin, E-cadherin have significant negative correlation with tumorgrade(p<0.01).Expression of c-myc has significant positive correlation with tumor grade(p<0.01).(3)The expression of α -catenin , β -catenin , E-cadherin have significant negative correlation with clinical Staging(p<0.05). Expression of c-myc has significant positive correlation with clinical Staging(p<0.05).(4)The expression of E-cadherin has positive correlation with the expression of α -catenin(p<0.01) and the expression of β -catenin has negative correlation with the expression of c-myc (p<0.01)in BTCC.(5)The expression of β -catenin and c-myc are significantly associated with recurrence of BTCC.Conclusion: The results of this study show that the abnormal expression of α -catenin, β -catenin, E-cadherin, c-myc play an important role in the genesis and progression of BTCC. 3 -catenin and c-myc may be a useful prognostic marker in bladder cancer.
