Purpose: To observe effects and mechanism of Eye-acupuncture on learning and memory ability, Choline acetyltraferase(AChE), Somato stain(SS), Superoxide dismutase(SOD), MDA in the rat of vascular dementia(VD) and ultrvctural.changes of neurons in hippocampus were observed with transmission electron microscope.Method: The experiment used a repeated transient global ischemia was performed in rats by 4-vessel occlusion(4-Vo) method. Thirty VD rats were randomly divided into control group, model group, Eye-acupuncture group and drug(Nimoton) group. Ten cases in each. Eye-acupuncture group select hepatic region, cardiac region, kidney region, thirty days as one course, the control and model groups was fed routinely. After thirty days, the rats were tested by learning and memory ability, then measure SOD, MDA in abdominal aorta blood, and AchE, SS in hippocampus tissue. Result: The model group showed severe leatning and memory disability. Compared with model group, Eye-acupuncture group and Nimoton group's learning and memory ability were improved obviously(P<0.01); The model group had a more marked decrease of AChE and SS than control group(P<0.01), Eye-acupuncture and Nimton groups' AChe and SS were improved obviously than model group(P<0.01). The model group had low SOD activity(P<0.01) and high MDA activity(P<0.01) than control group. The ultrastructure of neurons in hippocampus were damaged severely, by comparison with model group, Eye-acupuncture group's karyotheca were parent, mitochondrion ribose was reduced little than model group, myelinated nerve fiber demyelinatiori lightly, but had no blade disjunction and blood vessel endothelium contraction, neurons damage was lighter than control group, but heavier than central group.Conclusion: Eye-acupuncture can improve VD rats learning and memory ability, and it can also improve markedly ultrastructural alteration of neurons in hippocampus and multi-neurotransmitter.
