PrefaceThere were many reports of a new chronic disease in the 1980s. This disease was a s-yndrome with symptoms including fatigue, low fever, pharyngalgia, muscle ache, joint pain, headache and neurosis symptoms. In 1988, epidemiologist and clinical doctors of the US C-enters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) carried out analysis of this disease. They named this disease as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome during the meeting at Pitsburg University . In 1994, CDC modified its diagnoses standard. The scholars and doctors have studied this disease for fifty years, however, the pathogenesis is still not very clear. This situation givesTCM doctors more opportunities to study and treat CFS. Many doctors have tried Chinesemedicinal herb, and found that Chinese medicinal herb was effective in treating CFS. Basedon the theory foundation, we studied the epidemiological, symptoms and TCM syndrome ch-aracteristics of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome through theoretical and clinical research. 1.Theoretical study1.1 Modern medicine research on fatigue(1)The general concept of fatigue:Fatigue is a complicated physiological and mental pheno-menon. Because of different approaches in research, there has not been an exact definition of fatigue. However, fatigue can be outlined in three aspects. First, fatigue can be manifest-ed as reduced activity and work efficiency; second, fatigue is a subjective sensation of tire-dness; last, fatigue is caused by disorder of biological function.(2)Fatigue classification:In order to further study fatigue, we grouped fatigue into different categories in terms of its cause, location, pathogenesis, and manifestation type. These categ-ories include: physical fatigue and mental fatigue, physiological fatigue and muscle-mediate fatigue, acute fatigue and chronic fatigue, general fatigue and local fatigue. (3)Fatigue assessment: Since fatigue is not a clearly defined concept, we designed different test methods to evaluate the characteristics and level of fatigue. Mainly, we used physiolog-yical reaction tests including flicker fusion frequency, call the color continuously, myotasis reflex , fast insertion , skin electric test. Fatigue may also be evaluated using biochemical methods using blood or urine samples. Subjective assessments included investigation scales such as the FS-14 fatigue scale and the FAI fatigue scale. 1.2 The opinions about fatigue of TCMChinese medical science has unique opinions about fatigue in terms of the characteristics and causes of disease and pathology. (1) The meaning of fatigue in Chinese medicine: Fatigue was first recorded in the book of 《Jin Gui Yao Lue》. Using words such as "ShenTiDaiDuo", "SiZhiBuYuDong", "ShenTiChenZhi","TiJie","TiZhong", both mental fatigue physical fatigue were described. (2) The causes of fatigue: Ancient Chinese grouped the cause of fatigue into extrinsic fact-ors, intrinsic factors, and other factors. Extrinsic factors refer to Fen, Han, Shu,Shi,Zao,Huo,the six unmoral climate change. Intrinsic factors refer to Xi,Nu,You,Si,Bei,Kong,Jing, the se-ven excessive emotions. Other pathogenic factors refer to improper diet and imbalance betw-een work and rest, which can also cause fatigue.(3) The pathogenesis of fatigue: According to Chinese medicine theory, all the reasons whi-ch cause the unmoral function of QiXueYinYan and organs can lead to fatigue. It may first result in disorder of one organ, but may eventually involve other organs. Weakness as wellas excess syndromes can be showed. The weakness refers to the deficiency of QiXueYinYan,and the excess syndromes refer to stagnation of Qi, blood stasis, and Phlegm-Damp Syndro-me. (4)Chinese Prophylactic Therapeutic Principles for fatigue:In this study we discuss method for preventionand therapy of fatigue, such as herbtherapy, acupuncture and moxibuxtion therapy, and troptherapy. All theprophylactic therapeutic principles give us valuable experience in treating CFS. 1.3 TCM Syndrome of fatigue We screened and analyzed typical and signif...
