BackgroundStomach Cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors which affect the human being's health seriously .The incidence rate of this disease declines recently in Europe and Japan in the recent twenty or thirty years, but the number of new cases is increasing every year in the world due to aging .The incidence rate is the second among the males' malignant tumors and the third among those of females. In China, the stomach cancer is more common. Both of incidence and mortality rates of stomach cancer still occupy the first place in the list of all cancers, and it seriously affect the people's life and health, so as to become one of key diseases concerned.Although some progress has been made on the etiology of stomach cancer, the risk factors of stomach cancer are reported unconsistantly. It is thought that the cancer is caused by multiple risk factors such as diet which is the main risk factor, the life style and habit, drinking water, heredity and disease history,Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori), personality, psychology and physique. Many factors above are closely related to the living area, so it is very necessary to investigate the risk factors of stomach cancer in different areas at the same time.Hangzhou and Hetian, which locate in Zhejiang province in south-east China and in Xinjiang autonomous region in north-west China respectively, were chosen as study areas to investigate the risk factors of stomach cancer. The two areas are far different in economic and culture, which lead to different dietary habits, diet structure, life style, personality esteem and so on. Materials & methodsSubjects: To study the relationship between the stomach cancer and such factors as Life style and habit, heredity and disease history, personality & psychology, blood type, diet habit and food by using the matched case-control method .All cases of stomach cancer were diagnosed between years of 1997 - 2000 and registered in Hetian prefectural people's hospital, Xinjiang and provincial or municipal level or corresponding military hospitals in Hangzhou^hejiang. All cases were diagnosed by histopathology. This study was designed in matching with age,sex .nationality and living areas (Hetian: 1:2, Hangzhou: 1:1) .All controls had no neoplasm and other serious chronic diseases. The cases and controls must live in the studying areas for 30 years or above.Data collection and quality control: Al) the information of cases and controls was collected by face to face according to the questionnaire of Life and Health of Inhabitant. The questionnaire was set up with a pilot. Each questionnaire was checked by quality-control person after being filled in. If there were errors, thequestionnaire must be re-investigated.Statistical method: The data were processed with statistical software package ofEpi Info 6.04, spss/pc+10.0 and sas 10.0 in personal computer after being verified. The daily intakes of nutrients were estimated according to Table of FoodIngredient.Results1. Gastritis and gastroduodenal ulcer were the risk factors of stomach cancer(OR=10.13,95%CI:3.69~65.42;OR=9.50,95%CI:0.94-394.10. P<0.05).2. Smoking and drinking alcohol were the risk factors of stomach cancer, and drinking tea was the protective factor. The result from Hetian prefecture demonstrated that smoking especially beginning to smoke before 20 was more hazardous to stomach cancer (OR=3.09,95%CI: 1.27-7.38; OR=2.24, 95%CI: 1.10-5.12,, PO.05). The result from Hangzhou city demonstrated that it was risk factor for stomach cancer to begin to drink alcohol before 20 years old(OR=3.75,95%CI:l.19-16.67 , PO.05) and protective factor to drink tea(OR=0.38, 95%CI:0.17-0.78. PO.05). Moreover, it could be concluded that drinking tea was a protective factor to stomach cancer by the model of multivariate Logistic regression(OR=0.49,95%CI: 0.27-0.88. PO.05).3. The result from Hetian prefecture demonstrated that the factors listed below were more related to stomach...
