Objective Study of the status, situation and problems of general practitioners. To analyze systematically the general practitioner training requirements and summarize the current emphasis training demand and training methods of GPs. With the demand-based overall general practitioner training target being achieved, the resource use efficiency being raised, the GPs’ comprehensive quality improving and more excellent GP training the solution would be to optimize the community-level medical and health service system. Methods Design produced the questionnaire on the status and training needs of general practitioners by Delphi method according to the four aspects of doctors’ general competence. The process was carried out through stratified sampling and random sampling, select Fujian Province, Hubei province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from eastern, Central and Southern China, respectively. Choose three cities from each province(area) and three counties from each city, then choose three random villages or towns from each selected county. Select general practitioners from 2-3 agencies to conduct the questionnaire survey. Go through each level and investigate the status and needs of general practitioner training. Enter the data using software Epidata 3.02 and statistically analyze the absolute number, the mean and the proportion of indicators with software SPSS 19.Results The resultant GPs sample were predominantly male, with the population of 139 males(65.3%) and 72 females(33.8%), while the male-female gender ratio is 1.93: 1. Most of the GPs hold a bachelor’s degree and the amount of 112(52.6%). The population is greater than the national community health service centers average population of practicing(assistant) physicians, but the high degree still is a shortage. Primary titles and under, 113 people(53.1%), make up the major part of team, of which the intermediate and primary titles occupy 89.7%. 95.8% of respondents expressed the need to participate in a general practitioner training. Case history taking and case writing(64.3%) is to be the best mastered as General Medicine basic theory and skills, with the abnormal screening technology of today has caused children’s hearing and vision(31.5%) to be the worst. Training of common principles and basic knowledge of the accident and emergency pre-hospital care comes to be most urgent demanded for the percentage of 54.9 percent, while the abnormal screening technique for children hearing and vision and children dental care prevention of 13.1% to be the least. General practitioners of different ages and titles have different training needs and training needs for those under 35 years of age and those with junior titles are significantly higher. Conclusion GPs shortage and bad jobs appeal, has resulted in talent shortage of highly educated, high title and experienced experts. General medicine elementary theory knowledge and clinical skills to master of the operation rate is generally lower, maternal and child health, services of traditional Chinese medicine, and mental illness such as content to master rate is low, training needs is also low, GPs’ philosophy in general medicine is lacked. In different areas, age, title GPs needs at different levels of training content. Should strengthen the top-level design, through the guidance of policy and market, intensify the building of GPs team, not a hierarchical classification of a general practitioner training plan. The need of society, medical institutions and GPs as the guidance, take various training forms, improve the ability and level of GPs, develop ideas in general medicine.
