Wood,a kind of everlasting material used in architectures. The mankind has a long history of living in wood buildings. On the history, the wood construction emerged diverse feature, its roof form is also abundant colorful. Chinese ancient traditional wood construction is immortal art in the world building system, even in the west, famous of the stone buildings, its roof form also originated from wood construction, and used for a long period of time. Along with the development of the wood construction, the roof produced more abundant forms, in a process from tradition to modern, including flat roof, shed roof, gable roof, hip roof, gambrel roof, combinatorial roof and etc.In our country, because of the resources and technical levels, the wood construction is always excluded in the modern mainstream architectures. Until recently, because of the development of economy and new understanding of the living environment, people just start re- paying attention to wood construction buildings. But the related researches and literatures are still shorter, the researches on roof are much more absent. The main purpose that this thesis compose is to combine with the modern wood construction, study the roof design in the form and the structure, as a foundation research for expand applications in China.The thesis starts from the general situation of modern wood construction, first introduces the development history of the wood construction building roof, from the ancient to the modern times in both west and china, then introduces the form and technique characteristic of the roof, and puts forward the design and build procedures of the roof.The modern wood construction building roof is composed of roof coverings, roof sheathing, bearing structures, supporting system and suspend ceiling. The main part of the thesis is to study the structure of the modern wood construction roof, according to these constitute parts of the roof, including the roof framing system, roof coverings, material layer of heat preservation,heat insulation and waterproof, and interior decoration of the building roof.The wood construction building roof has a lot of factors that need to be considered in the design and protection, including the building stability, durability, heat insulation, sound insulation, fire proof, water proof, moisture proof, mothproof, antisepsis, endurance of the wind and snow load and etc., particularly for some areas where the earthquake and typhoon often happen, the wood construction roof design must be also in consideration of defending the hurricane and earthquake and load endurance, so as to prolong the service life of the roof.
