The transmission of plastic worm wheel and steel worm, in which plastic helical wheel (viz. plastic worm wheel) is instead of steel worm, is a drive mechanism for transferring power and movement. With the continually high developping and renovating of gear industry, this type of drive mechanism is applied more and more widely. Because of so many advantageous of the transmission, such as low cost of material, light quality, better frictional behaviour, non-electric and easy manufacturing, the drive is indispensability applied in various areas, just like auto chairs, adjuster of headlight, gear retarder and washing machine etc. But there aren't a unitive reference standard for design of the drive by application, and it's also a wrong way to design and apply according to the standard of steel gear.Thus, the design standard and research method of the transmission of plastic worm wheel and steel worm should be achieved, theoretic research of the drive will be more useful, and also to the application in practise. The transmission of plastic worm wheel and steel worm has been performed theoretic analysis and experiment research in the article. Based on the theories of gear engagement, contact analysis, friction and heat transfer, a model and method of finite element structure and thermal analysis for the drive were established. Combimed with the FEA tool MSC.Nastran, theoretic calculation and data from experiments, the contact strength, deformation on the tooth flank and stress envelope has been researched.In the finality, the problems requiring further studies are discussed.
