Coal Water Slurry (CWS) technology is the suitable technology of replacing oil, environmental protection and saving energy currently in China. Using coal instead of oil is that the strategy and real choice of long-term and stable developments to energy of our country. In order to reduce the manufacturing cost and improve the enterprise's integrated ability to compete, Nanhai Power Plant 1 built a 670t/h ultra-high pressure coal-water slurry boiler. The boiler is a pioneering product in china and domestically successful coal water slurry burning technology is completely adopted. The boiler was set up completely in the middle of August, 2005. By the day of 15/10/2005, the combustion experiment had been carried out thoroughly and it is put into production smoothly and continuously now. Valuable experiment data and operating experience has been acquired, and this achievement can play an exemplification role in popularizing coal water slurry application in great power plant boiler. In this paper, firstly some basic properties of coal water slurry were studied in laboratory, including rheological property, stability property and thermal analysis. Secondly the design of the boiler, the cold model experiment and oil combustion test is briefly introduced. This paper mainly relate to the coal-water slurry combustion experiment. A lot of tests was carried out, including tests of all kinds of influencing factor in burning CWS, and then the results of tests were analyzed. Incorporation project practical situation, we presented means to eliminate defect during coal-water slurry burning process. In the aspects of pollutant emission, the emissions of both SO2 and NOx were measured at the rear part of the boiler. The content of seven harmful heavy metals in the original coal, CWS, bottom slag and fly ash was measured to analyze the migration of trace elements during combustion in boiler.
