In this thesis the influence of cigarette paper characteristics (flax, air permeability, grammage and burning additives) on the yields of cigarette mainstream smoke (tar, nicotine, CO) and some harmful components (benzo[a]pyrene, phenol) have been investigated thoroughly by the single-factor and orthogonal experiment design. It is found that the four characteristics of cigarette paper have different impacts on the mainstream smoke yields in the order of additives>air permeability>grammage>flax. Meanwhile, grammage and additives of cigarette paper show more important effects on the selective reduction of benzo[a]pyrene and phenol than air permeability and flax. The optimized characteristics of cigarette paper have also been obtained for the strict control of tar, nicotine and CO levels in mainstream smoke. The characteristics of cigarette paper were explored to set up the prediction models of mainstream smoke components(tar, nicotine and CO) by robustness analysis. The effectiveness of the established models have been surveyed on unblended and blended tobaccos. It is demonstrated that the predictive models work well with the acceptable standard deviations:tar (0.5mg), nicotine (0.06mg) and CO (1.2mg).
