Red Mud is the waste of the alumina industry, which yield is tremendous. Through summarizing the present utilization situation of the Red Mud at home and abroad, combined with the plant repair and soil improvement technology, this paper propose a new technology of utilization of Red Mud——the soil-conversion of the Red Mud.The soil-conversion technology is basis with the specific component and the physical and chemical properties of the Red Mud, explore the additives which can decrease the alkaline and the content of heavy metal in the Red Mud, make the improved Red Mud suitable for the plant growth, and screening the pant which suitable for large-scale planting. Thus we can deal with Red Mud by Harmless Treatment with low cost.This subject use gypsum, phosphogypsum, biomass powder, waste compost product, activated sludge as the component of the modifier. Focusing on the different proportion of the modifier, we choose alfalfa, ryegrass, america chicory and tall fescue for the pot experiment. The results showed that the plant growth situation is better when the organic addition quantity increase. The growth situation is better in the mix addition than in the single addition. In the same addition, the growth situation of alfalfa and ryegrass is better than america chicory and tall fescue.The result of the leachate experiment showed, when Red Mud mixed with phosphogypsum, the concentration of Cd,Be in the leachate reduced to lower than the ground water quality standards III, but the concentration of the As,Se,Hg increase quickly because of the mixing, higher than the ground water quality standards III. When Red Mud mixed with the biomass powder, except the concentration of Se in the leachate is a little higher than ground water quality standards III, the other 9 heavy metal elements are all in the safe scale, because of the addition of biomass powder, the concentration of As,Hg reduced to lower than standards III from high level. The technology of the soil-conversion of the Red Mud is a simple way to deal with mass Red Mud, which can get huge economic, environmental and social benefits with low-cost.
