Oil spill pollution is one of the serious marine pollutions. Once oil is released into ocean, it may have significant ecological and socioeconomic impact on coastal zone, as well as human health. Therefore, Marine countries around the world are now actively involved in oil spill monitoring and management, which mainly focuses on searching for the chronic or recurrent oil leakage from ships and oil platforms and pipelines. At present, satellite remote sensing and airborne remote sensing are mainapproaches to monitor oil spill. As to airborne remote sensing, it is characteristic of maneuverability. However, it is expensive to be executed, and limited by flight distance. Compared with plane, satellite remote sensing can monitor extensive area with low cost. With more satellites launching, real-time and correctness of oil spill monitoring will improve much more. The improvement of spatial and spectrai resolution of sensors loaded on satellite has brought a tremendous amount of data, which causes huge staff workload and low efficiency. In this paper, an oil spectral database is established, which can help to determine spectral bands sensitive to oil spill. Based on above work, oil spill objects are extracted using remote sensing image processing software. The results show that this paper presents an effective way to choose sensitive bands for oil spill monitoring, which enhances speed and effectiveness of oil spill detection.
