In this thesis, smoking was performed on a reconstructed Borgwaldt RM20/ CS smoking machine. The total particulate matter in the mainstream cigarette smoke was trapped according to the standard method. The organic acids in TPM of mainstream cigarette smoke were extracted ultrasonically with dichloromethane, then were derived with N,O-Bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroaceta-mide. The selected ion monitoring GC/MS and precolumn were applied in this study. By optimizing experimental conditions and parameters, the reliable analytical method which overcame the shortage of traditional extraction method was developed. 1) The method for simultaneous detection of lower and higher fatty acids in TPM of mainstream cigarette smoke was developed. 39 kind of organic acids (23 saturated monobasic carboxylic acids, 8 unsaturated organic acids, 2 phenyl carboxylic acids and 6 hydroxy acids) in TPM of cigarette smoke were detected simultaneously. The contents of 22 acidic constituents were determined quantitatively with the double internal standards (trans -2- hexenoic acid and cinnamic acid) in this study. The recoveries ranged from 74.3% to 101.8% and RSD is all below 9.8%. This method has a simple sampling procedure and high sensitivity. The total process of analysis was completed for TPM of only 5 cigarettes. 2) The contents of organic acids in TPM of 10 kinds of domestic flue-cured cigarettes were also analyzed and compared respectively. The study results showed that the contents of volatile and semi-volatile organic acids enhanced with the increasing of tar; and the acidic constituents in TPM of mainstream smoke were similar, but the contents of some organic acids were obviously different. 3) Puff-by-puff smoking was performed on a reconstructed smoking machine. The TPM yields of each puff of 20 cigarettes was collected on a Cambridge pad according to the standard method. The traditional chemical constituents including of TPM, nicotine, water, tar, CO in each puff of mainstream smoke were determined. The study results indicated that there is a trend in which the analyte delivery increases with increasing puff count. This trend in which analyteconcentration such as tar, water and nicotine increases with puff number is more similar to the total of particulate matter. 4)The method of puff-by-puff analysis of volatile and semi-volatile organic acids in TPM of mainstream cigarette smoke was...
