The construction of coordination polymers and networks by the self-assembly of polydentate ligands and transition metal ions is a rapidly growing area of research. Phenoxyacetic acid plays an important role as an antibacterial reagent for its biological activities. So we developed the study on structural chemistry of Cu and Mn coordination polymers with substituted phenoxyacetyl ligands.Sixteen compounds have been synthesized and characterized. These are nine complexes with N-salicylaldehyde-N'-(o-nitrophenoxyacetyl) hydrazone (H2L1) ( {Cu(L1)(Mpl)}∞ (1), {Cu2(L1)2(Doxa)}∞ (2), {Cu(L1)(Mpl)}∞ (3), {Cu(L1)(hmt)}∞ (4), Cu(L1)(Him) (5), Co(L1)(Mpl)2(OAc) (6), Cu2(L1)2(TEBA) (7), Mn(L1)(acac)(H2O) (8), Fe(L1)(acac)(H2O) (9)), two complexes with N-salicylaldehyde-N'-(p-methoxyphenoxy-acetyl) hydrazone (H2L2) ({CuL2}∞ (10) and Mn(L2)(acac)(EtOH)·H2O (11)), other substituted N-salicylaldehyde-N'-phenoxyacetyl hydrazone complexes and related complexes ({Cu(L3)(Mpl)}∞ (12), {Cu(L3)( hmt)}∞ (13) and Cu(L5)(Py) (16)) and two metallacrowns [Mn6(C16H13N2O5)6(MeOH)2(DMF)4]·(MeOH)4 (14) and [Fe(C15H10N3O6)(DMF)]6·H2O (15). The structures of the sixteen title compounds were studied. The IR and UV spectra of some selected compounds have been assigned. There are many different structural characterizations in a series of complexes containing L1 (1~9). Different coordinated solvent molecules (morpholine, [1,4]Dioxane, and hmt) bridge structure units of copper complex, forming an extended 2D network, a double-chain and an infinite chain structures in 1~4, respectively. There are centrosymmetrical dimmers connected by hydrogen bonds in complexes 8~9. The neighboring complex molecules in 10 are combined by N-N bridge, forming a 1D structure. The water molecule with three hydrogen bonds bridges three neighboring complex molecules 12, resulting in an extended 2D structure. There is a planar (M-N-N)6 core ring structure in the two hexanuclear Mn/Fe(III) 18-azametallacrowns-6 (14 and 15). The six metal ions in each of the two azametallacrowns (14 and 15) have a propeller configuration with alternating (/( forms. The azametallacrown 14 represents the first structural characterization of a metallacrown with two kinds of coordinated solvent molecules.
