Background:Buddhism is a religion which attaches great importance to life and health, and has contributed a lot of medical contents. After Buddhism was introduced into China, its medical contents and traditional Chinese medicine were intercommunicated and integrated, and monks used it to spread Buddhism, which made the value of Buddhist medicine gradually come into people’s sight.Since the 1990s,scholars in China have been doing research on Buddhist medicine, but the research on the concept of etiology in Buddhist scriptures and Tibetan medicine has not yet taken shape, secondly, there is no explanation of the concept of etiology in Buddhist medicine.Besides, there is also a lack of logic in the study of the categories of etiology in Tibetan medicine.Purpose of the study:In this study, starting with the Tibetan medical literature of Buddhist scriptures, the ancient and modern literature related to the etiology of Buddhist medicine were searched and sorted out,in order to understand the content of the etiology of Buddhist medicine and master the direction of the etiology of Buddhist medicine.Secondly, through the analysis and integration of the documents and materials examined,we can draw the conclusion that there are several major aspects in the discussion of the causes of diseases in Tibetan medicine of Buddhism, such as "Four major causes of diseases","Annoyance causes of diseases","Insect wind causes of diseases","Karma causes of diseases",etc.,these aspects were elaborated in detail to provide basis for the study of the definition, characteristics and value of aetiology.According to the content of the etiology view of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures, the definition of the etiology view is summarized, the train of thought is clarified, and the contents of each major aspect are logically concatenated so that the etiology view with a complete structure can be presented. Finally,it discusses the influence of the concept of etiology of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures on traditional Chinese medicine and its embodiment in the classics of traditional Chinese medicine, the academic significance of studying the concept of etiology for the study of Buddhist medicine and the historical value of its literature,to provide reference for the development of psychosomatic medicine.Content and findings:This article is divided into four parts to explore the concept of etiology in Buddhist scriptures and Tibetan medicine:The first part combs the origin of Buddhist medicine, makes clear the relationship between history of India Vedic medicine and Buddhist medicine, emphasizes the difference between them, and makes clear that Buddhist medicine is not a reproduction of ancient Indian medicine,it is the original religious medic:ine, understanding its unique significance and value. This paper discusses the definition of Buddhism medicine, the view of Buddhism on health, and the definition and classification of diseases in Buddhism medicine. With the help of the electronic version of Dazheng Xinxiu Dazangjing, the cause-related contents in the Tibetan medicine of the Buddhist scriptures were thoroughly screened, and after removing the contents of religious teachings, the 135 Buddhist sutras contain the treatise on the etiology of Buddhist medicine, and the classification methods of the etiology are analyzed. The second part, combined with the literature, elaborates the specific content of the etiology view of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures. The concept of etiology mainly includes five aspects:"Four major causes of disease","Annoyance causes disease","Insect wind causes disease","Karma causes disease"and "Other factors cause disease",in order to constitute an important part of the human body, the four major are mutually institutionalized, any large increase in loss leads to the four major imbalance, imbalance, and then lead to different manifestations of the disease;According to Buddhist medicine, people are disturbed by fundamental vexation, which leads to disease. The three poisons are the most basic factors in afflictions, and also the most fundamental afflictions affecting the spiritual function.Different degrees of three poisons will lead to different symptoms and pathological behaviors;five covers are the exertion of three poisons, the psychological diseases caused by 80 insects and 80 wind are the most unique theories of etiology in Tibetan medicine of Buddhism, which can be compared with many mental diseases in modern medicine, the pathogenic mechanism of the 80 worms is quite similar to modern microbiology, and the mechanism of the 80 winds is also related to the human immune system, the cause of the past world and the present world can cause diseases. The past world can connect the two worlds and cause diseases in the present world, and the past world can cause diseases in the five viscera and five roots In Tibetan medicine of Buddhism sutra,we can also find the cause of diet disorder, sleep disorder, excessive drinking, seasonal climate, meditation disorder,devil-caused disease and poison-insect injury. In the third part, the key words are "Buddha","Four great powers","Three poisons","Greed","Greed, hatred"and "Karma",it is concluded that its influence on TCM is mainly manifested in four major diseases, greed, dosa and karmic diseases. The theory of "Four major diseases"has been adopted by many doctors and combined with the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Some doctors also use the four major explanations to guide their treatment Greed, hatred and disease are found in the works of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),which are regarded by many doctors as the key to the cultivation of the mind. The fourth part summarizes the detailed content of the view of etiology of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures, compares it with other medical etiology, combs out the structure of pathogenic factors in Buddhist scriptures, and defines the etiology of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures. This paper discusses the three-dimensional concept of the etiology of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures, including the unity of the internal environment of human body, the unity of man and the external environment, and the unity of the third generation, this paper points out the relationship between cause and cause, which are mediating or restricting each other, and expounds the unique way of exploring the cause of disease in Buddhist medicine, including examining the cause of disease, observing the cause of knowledge and understanding the cause of insight. Finally,it discusses the characteristics and value of the etiology view of Tibetan medicine in Buddhist scriptures, points out its relationship with modern medicine, and shows the advanced nature of Buddhist medicine, this paper reveals the advantages of the view of etiology of Buddhist medicine to the exploration of psychosomatic medicine, and its enlightenment to the moral restraint and behavior norm.
