Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation follows the manuscript style dissertation and aims to improve sleep quality in older adults living in long term care settings (LTC) by applying Person-Centered Care (PCC). The first manuscript is a narrative review of the literature which outlines the principal PCC models in LTC and synthesizes current evidence of the effects of multiple PCC models on resident outcomes. The second manuscript reports findings of a retrospective study which examined factors associated with daytime sleep in residents living in a nursing home setting using Minimum Data Set records. This study aimed to identify the most influential factors of daytime sleep in LTC residents and indicate targeting factors for improving sleep in these older adults in future promising interventions. The third manuscript is the final dissertation study reports on a pilot study which tested the effects of a PCC intervention on sleep in assisted living residents with dementia. This study was the first attempt to examine the effects of PCC on sleep as a primary outcome through objective measure (Actigraphy) in LTC residents with dementia.
