Purpose The history of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)shows that the basic theory of TCM has been developing dynamically. The formation of the current basic theoretical framework of TCM comes from the cycle of continuous practice-summary-repractice-resummary for thousands of years. The visceral theory,an important part of the basic theory of TCM studying the relationship of Zang-fu,body and orifices as well as the relationship between Zang-fu and nature, focuses on the investigation of the visceral physiological functions and pathological changes. The current literature research is not enough to describe the path of TCM theory’s research and development, and there are not many concrete descriptions of the development of the concept of TCM basic theory. This thesis aimed to explore the historical evolution of TCM basic theory in terms of heart and lung with the aiding of literature research.Method The thesis focused on heart and lung by taking the nine representative medical classics of their own era as research objects, including Nei Jing,Nan Jing,Zhubing Yuanhou Lun,Waitai Miyao,Taiping Shenghui Fang,Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang,Shengji Zonglu,Puji Fang,Yizong Jinjian. In order to depict the theory development route of heart and lung, contents that related with heart and lung were sorted out and studied. On one hand, the thesis systematically reviewed the basic theoretical research and treatment of heart and lung peculiar to one certain time by investigating each individual ancient book.On the other hand, the physiology, etiology, pathogenesis and treatment principles of heart and lung were systematically organized and summarized. With the format of monograph, the development of the basic theory of heart and lung was elucidated and key cognitive changes in the development of the basic theory of heart and lung along the time were shown.ResultThe development of heart theory mainly involved: the heart system was formed in the era of Nei Jing, the physiological function of the heart had been expanding with time elapsing, and the function of the heart that controlling the mind activities evolved from the relationship between the emotions and minds in Neijing to the observation record of the various changes of mind in Zhubing Yuanhou Lun.Taiping Shenghui Fang had a special record of irritation and its treatment.Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang had specific prescriptions for the treatment of palpitation.Shengji Zonglu and Puji Fang made a careful distinction for different causes of changes in the mind.Yizong Jinjian had different prescriptions for different types of manifestations in minds. The heart diseases recorded had also been enriched with the time passing by,reflecting the development and completeness of the theory that the heart controls the mind activities. The function that the heart controls blood was also clear in the historical development and evolution. The relationship between blood volume, blood circulation and heart were enriched and perfected in each medical book.Ancient doctors gradually realized the close relationship between heart, blood and blood vessels, and established the pathogenesis that heart, blood and blood vessels were interrelated and gradually formed the therapeutic method for reconciling the blood vessels and regulating and nourishing blood and qi.The theoretical development of lung mainly involved: the physiological functions of the lung-the lungs governs qi,the lung connects all vessels, the lung governs skin and hair, the lung governs sound, the lung governs regulation of water passages, the lung stores soul-were constantly verified and expanded through symptoms, treatments and medications in succession of different dynasties. The pathogenesis of lung mainly focused on the wind, cold and heat.It is characterized by dysfunction of qi and abnormal metabolism of body fluid. The understanding of lung qi deficiency was also deepened and the parasitic diseases were recorded. For the treatment of lung diseases, the main treatments included replenishing the kidney qi,moisturizing the lung, relieving asthma and mobilizing the body fluid. With time elapsing, the therapeutic method was also enriched. This study paid attention to the theory development in the treatment of heart and lung diseases. From the meridian acupuncture of Neijing to the TCM decoction, amainstream therapeutic way of Tang and Song Dynasties, and then to the compound prescriptions of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the continuous development of diseases treatment since the Han and Tang Dynasties were objectively reflected.More attention was expected to aroused in the academic community for further exploring and unearthing the basic theory of classical Chinese medicine. Conclusion By investigating the high-academic-value medical classics like Nei Jing,Nan Jing,Zhubing Yuanhou Lun,Waitai Miyao,Taiping Shenghui Fang,Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang,Shengji Zonglu,Puji Fang,Yizong Jinjian, the thesis portrayed the origin and the development of theory of heart and lung, laying a solid foundation for accurately inheriting the basic theory of TCM.
