Objective: To investigate the average annual economic burden and its factors of Wilson’s disease patients. Methods: A retrospective questionnaire survey was conducted on Wilson’s disease patients admitted to the Department of internal medicine of neurology of the first people’s Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2012, collecting and calculating the annual economic burden of disease from 2013 October to 2014 October. And the main factors affecting the economic burden of disease were analyzed by multiple linear regression method. Results: Of all 73 Wilson’s disease patients, the average annual economic burden of disease was RMB 14879.2(RMB 349.3 –RMB 67458.2). The direct medical related disease economic burden was RMB 11793.1, accounting for 79.3% of the total expenditure, while the direct non-medical related disease economic burden and the indirect economic burden were RMB 1204 and RMB 1882.2 respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the standard coefficient of hospitalization days was 0.674(P=0.000) and the standard coefficient of de-copper drugs was 0.188(P=0.019) related to the annual total cost. The standard coefficient of hospitalization days was 0.650(P=0.000) and the standard coefficient of de-copper drugs was 0.227(P=0.006) related to the annual direct medical cost. The standard coefficient of hospitalization days was 0.346(P=0.005) related to indirect cost. Conclusion: Wilson’s disease caused serious economic burden, mainly resulting from the direct medical expenses. The total annual economic burden of disease as well as the direct medical related cost had correlation with hospitalization days and copper excretion drugs whereas the indirect economic burden of disease was influenced by hospitalization days. This study gave a preliminary understanding of the economic burden of the WD patients in our country, collected baseline data for formulating strategies for disease control and prevention, and also provided the information source for future intervention project health policy evaluation, new treatment approach and funding scheme to patients and their families.
