The research on "Typical Reporting" encounters a downturn after an upsurge in the 1988s. After reading and analyzing countless literature on "Typical Reporting", the author thought that the audience has insufficient discovery in the deep working mechanism of "Typical Reporting".At present, its characteristics which the research reports include: more practices, less theories; more descriptions, less analysis; more deduction, less inductions; more macroscopic views, less microscopic views; more uni-dimensional acceptance of view, less multi-dimensional criticism and reconsideration. This article suggests that, if "Typical Reporting" is only used as a method of reporting, it will be difficult to write and discuss in depth innovatively, with the "internal" working mechanism continuing to be ignored. However, "Typical Reporting" is always "revered" as a "special Chinese characteristic". How is it special? What is its essential characteristic? How in the past, present and future? And so on, if the question receives any attention. The essence of "Typical Reporting" is illustrated by its own definition, which is where the research paper starts focusing on. That include, "at present, what's acceptable by the typical Chinese journalist", its definition as "a thing or a character, of representative nature", discovered during the analysis. The current understanding and interpretations of "Typical Reporting" is very different from its actual definition. This is what the author thought, an incomprehensive spot in the research of "Typical Reporting".Later, the author revisits the Soviet's and Mao Zedong's principles, two traditional lines of thought, and introduces the Foucault's perspective in relation to journalism in Mainland China. With this research being structured in three dimensions, criticism, hybridity and localization of Foucault's discourse theories, we have obtained new thoughts about "Typical Reporting". The strength of the application of Foucault's discourse analysis in the study of "Typical Reporting" is an extraordinary characteristic. The public and hidden transcripts of "Typical Reporting" differentiate itself above the analytic foundation. The strength of "Typical Reporting" is a characteristic that is a symbolic national resource, one thatillustrates the deep structure and culture of Mainland China. Its value will continue to grow significantly. At the same time, the strength of "Typical Reporting" is a symbol of connection which profoundly illustrates the "cooperation" between the government and the media, something that seems to be peaceful but unusual.
