The author mainly researches the basic situation of compiling and applying local teaching materials during nearly a century of Shanxi, and analyzes the collected materials in the pattern of text analysis. The study is based on the case of compilation and application of the local teaching materials from Shanxi, the theory of structuration as the main paradigm, the combination of historical research and field study, emic study and etic study. The author aims at enriching the theoretical study of the local teaching materials by researching their relevant policies and specific content as well as social attitude to them, and by exploring their basic theories on the base of describing and explaining their birth and evolution.By analyzing the gained local teaching materials, the study briefly introduces their general situation from Qing dynasty to the present age; meanwhile, chooses typical ones and analyzes them in pattern of text analysis, that include Local Records of Baode Country and Local Records of Pinglu Country from Qing dynasty, Popular Text of Chinese,Agricultural Text, Commercial Text, Brief Summary of Sericulture, the Local Text of Datong Country, and the Text of Native Revolution from Republic of China, as well as Literacy Text For the Farmers ofXiyang Country, Geography of Shanxi Province, the History of Lvliang District, Practical Technology in Lvliang District, and Golden Taigu Country from the People's Republic of China. The research mainly combines the relevant history with field study, interprets the compilation of the local teaching materials setted in the special historical background, analyzes their style and feature in the aspects of content, language and system, and their status and social effects of the different historical periods, as well as social attitudes to them. The result of study reveals the reason for difference among the style and users of local teaching materials is interaction of policy, local culture and compilation.The research is based on studying birth and evolution of Shanxi local teaching material. The author has a research on the meaning and extension of local teaching material, factors in affecting how to compile local teaching material, the function of local teaching material, and so on. Different people look at local teaching material in quite different ways, but they are always served as textbooks about local education in order to loyalize students to their hometown and motherland. As the society becomes more and more advanced and complicated, compilers infuse new educational idea into local teaching material. We should have enough cognition about the complexity of the conception, the relation between different conception and especial social environment, the recondite epistemological hypothesis of the conception. The local teaching materials exert the functions of cultivating next generation, cultural inheritance and cultural integration. The local teaching materials have vitality for their functions.The author analyzes some problems in the course of applying local teaching materials and makes suggestions about their advancement in the future. First of all, we should have correct understanding about relationship between local teaching material and basic education, take advantage of multiplicate teaching methods and curriculum resources in the limited time. In the next place, the compilation should attach importance to the tenet of basic education, local knowledge and multicultural society. At last, in order to exert the value of local teaching materials, enough teachers who are competent for local education are needed. The reform of normal education is necessary, which include establishing cooperative relationship between normal education and local education, perfecting the curriculum of normal education, conforming pre-service training and on-the job training about teachers of the primacy and secondary schools.
