Background: Esophageal cancer occurs over the world with large geograpgic difference. Both environment and genetic factors modulate esophageal cancer risk. To explore the risk factors of esophageal cancer comprehensively, two matched case-control studies and one meta-analysis were conducted. One case-control study was conducted in a high-risk area of China-Yanting County, which was designed to clarify the major risk factors of esophageal cancer in this high-risk area. Another case-control study was condcted among Japanese, which was applied to discern the effects of ALDH2, ADH2, MTHFR and MTR gene polymorphisms on esophagreal cancer susceptibility. The meta-analysis was used to analyse the relationship of CYP1A1, CYP2E1, GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 gene polymorphisms with esophageal cancer risk. Methods: 1) 191 histologically diagnosed esophageal cases and 198 controls were collected as study subjects. Information on life-style and food consumption was collected for all subjects. And ALDH2 and ADH2 gene polymorphisms were also assayed. Logistic Regression was applied to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for each item. 2) Cases were 165 patients who...
