Objectives This series of studies aims at developing a conceptual framework for understanding determinants of HIV/STI epidemics and using this model to guide identification of potentially important not yet fully researched factors relating to the epidemics and the development and application of standard community and clinical interventions against the diseases.Methods Firstly, a theoretical model of HIV/STI determinants was constructed using soft-systems thinking based upon comprehensive review of existing researches and intervention practices regarding the diseases. Then, helped by this model, a survey into the relationships between personality and attachment styles and HIV/STI-related knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) was carried out among 1262 undergraduate students selected from the then current enrollees of Anhui Medical University via randomized cluster sampling. The survey utilized a self-administered questionnaire consisting of proven personality and attachment inventories and structured questions about HIV/STI-related KAP. Thirdly, a standard protocol for implementing and an inventory for rapid assessment of community-wide responses to HIV/STI were developed under the guidance of the conceptual framework mentioned above and by employing, again, soft-systems thinking.
