[Background and Objectives] With the rapid development of transportation, motorized vehicle road traffic crashes have become a world disaster, which greatly threatens the safety and health of the human. Road traffic injury is a major cause of death and disability globally. In China, road traffic injury is the leading cause of death for population under 45 year of age and the leading cause of working-life years lost in China. Therefore, the problem of road traffic injury in China needs urgent attention. It is of great importance to study the risk factors of road traffic injury and offer rational evidence to the government to make policies on control and prevention of road traffic injury, In recent years, there have been a lot of epidemiological studies on road traffic crash injuries, but most of them were restricted to cross-sectional studies. Up to now, there have been no reports on case-control studies to estimate the association of road traffic crashes with drivers, vehicles and environmental factors simultaneously. Therefore, on the basis of a cross-sectional study, a case-control study was undertaken to investigate the effects of interested factors, drivers, vehicles and environment, on road traffic crashes, and their interaction.[Study design] The surveillance data on road traffic crashes in Shenyang, 2001 were collected to describe the characteristics and laws of the occurrence of road traffic crashes. A case-control study was conducted. Totally 406 case drivers who had a motor vehicle crash in Huanggu District, Shenyang City were recruited from December 2001 to August 2002. In the same period and the same district, 438 control drivers driving normally on roads were recruited at randomly selected time of a day, and day of a week on the road site.
