High-quality development is the future aim of China’s economy,and the competitive pressures faced by companies in achieving that goal should not be underestimated.In order to gain a foothold in the fierce market competition,companies need to continuously develop new products to meet market demand.And the advantages of technological diversification may play a key role in a company’s new product development performance.At the same time,knowledge field activity may play the role of bridge and linkage in it.And top management team heterogeneity as a characteristic of corporate managers can have an impact on the implementation of technological diversification.In existing studies,scholars have not reached a consistent conclusion on the relationship between technological diversification and new product development performance.How companies can effectively use technological diversification to improve new product development performance is not only a real problem faced by companies,but also a research bottleneck that needs to be broken by academia.Based on this,this paper systematically explains the concepts and related characteristics of technological diversification,knowledge field activity,top management team heterogeneity and new product development performance,and empirically investigates the effect of technological diversification on new product development performance using 245 question-naire data from high-tech manufacturing firms,and further investigates the mediating role of knowledge field activity and the moderating effect of top management team heterogeneity.The main findings of the study are: Related technological diversification has a positive impact on new product development performance.Unrelated technological diversification negatively affects new product development performance.Knowledge field activity partially mediated relationships between technological diversification(related technological diversification & un-related technological diversification)and new product development performance.Top management team heterogeneity positively moderates relationships between related technological diversification and knowledge field activity.Top management team heterogeneity plays a mediated moderating effect between related technological diversification and new product development performance.On the one hand,the findings of this study provide theoretical insights for an in-depth exploration of the relationship between technological diversification and new product development performance.On the other hand,it also provides concrete suggestions in practice for companies to develop technological diversification strategies,create a corporate communication climate,and select the right top management team members.
