Abstract/Summary:
With the vigorous promotion of urbanization in China,a large amount of surplus rural labor continues to move to cities. However, due to the dual urban-rural household registration system in China, rural migrant workers face difficulties such as poor employment quality, inadequate essential public services, difficulties in children’s schooling, and difficulties in integrating into cities, resulting in a weak willingness to stay in cities and a low level of citizenship among rural migrant workers. In the process of migrant workers’ urbanization, organizations,as a vital force to make up for the lack of government governance, can help migrant workers expand their social capital, obtain resources and improve their mobility, thus enhancing their sense of belonging and willingness to stay in the city, relieving the pressure of "semi-urbanization" of migrant workers and promoting their urbanization. Therefore, exploring the relationship mechanism between organizations and migrant workers’ willingness to stay and citizenship in cities and proposing feasible paths is significant in the current context of new urbanization and harmonious urban-rural development.Adequate organizational participation has a certain influence on integrating migrant workers into cities and their development into citizens. In this paper,we apply the theoretical methods of dual economy theory, population migration theory, organizational theory, statistical measurement methods and models to construct a theoretical analysis framework of "organizational participation-urban residence-citizenship" of migrant workers. The theoretical framework of "organizational participation-urban residence-citizenship" is developed. The main research results and conclusions are as follows.Firstly, the Logit model was used to study the influence of organizational participation on migrant workers’ willingness to stay in urban areas. The employment quality composite index and urban identity index were constructed. The mediating effect model was used to test the empirical analysis of the influence paths of identity and employment quality on migrant workers’ willingness to stay in urban areas. The study finds that organizational involvement has a significant positive effect on migrant workers’ willingness to stay in cities, and the effect is heterogeneous at the intergenerational and spatial levels. We further investigate the mechanism of organizational involvement on migrant workers’ willingness to stay in cities and find that organizational involvement further influences their willingness to stay in cities through the mediating role of employment quality and urban identity.Secondly,we construct an evaluation index system for the citizenship level of migrant workers in four aspects, including employment status, lifestyle, social security, and psychological identity.Measure the citizenship level of migrant workers by using the entropy value method, visualize the measurement results with Arc GIS software, and conduct overall,inter-provincial and group analyses. The results show that the overall citizenship level of migrant workers in China is low.The citizenship level of the new generation of migrant workers is higher than that of the old generation of migrant workers. In each sub-dimension,the citizenship level of lifestyle is the highest, and the citizenship level of psychological identity is the lowest. Finally, quantile regression models were used to explore the effects of organizational participation on the overall citizenship level and sub-dimensional citizenship level of migrant workers, and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition method was used to decompose the intergenerational differences in the citizenship level of migrant workers. The results of the study show that organizational participation has a positive effect on the citizenship level of migrant workers,in which the effect of formal organizational participation is higher than that of self-organizational participation. The intergenerational differences in the citizenship level of migrant workers mainly originate from the differences in characteristics effects, with the contribution of formal organizational participation being 16.90% and that of self-organizational participation being 62.04%.
