| With the rapid development of society, the public’s attention to enterprises not only stays in the realization of their economic goals, but also begins to pay attention to the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility.Enterprises enjoy public services such as education, medical care, and transportation provided by the government in the society, and corporate tax payment is used as the cost of enjoying public services,so corporate social responsibility must include paying taxes according to law.As the main part of government revenue, taxation is an important financial source for the government to provide public services, and corporate tax avoidance is an act that is easy to touch legal loopholes, which will erode the government’s financial status and affect the overall welfare of society.Studies have shown that corporate social responsibility may be responsible for the common interests of internal and external stakeholders and influenced by a good corporate culture,or it may be to cover up tax avoidance and neutralize potential risks caused by tax avoidance. At present, the research of domestic scholars on corporate social responsibility and tax avoidance behavior mainly involves factors such as the nature of property rights, the quality of social responsibility information disclosure, tax collection and management, etc.,so this paper will further consider the impact of business environment factors on the relationship between the two,so as to provide a richer perspective for the existing research. This paper first analyzes the research background and significance, related literature, etc.in the introduction.Secondly, the relevant concepts are defined, and the mechanism analysis is carried out according to stakeholder theory, corporate culture theory, risk management theory and rent-seeking theory. Then, the development status of corporate social responsibility and corporate tax avoidance in China is sorted out; Then, the financial data of China’s A-share listed enterprises from 2016 to 2020 and the corporate social responsibility scoring data of Hexun.com were selected as research samples, and the relationship between corporate social responsibility performance and the degree of corporate tax avoidance was analyzed empirically through multiple linear regression. The empirical results show that the better the CSR performance, the lower the degree of tax avoidance, which indicates that the stakeholder theory and corporate culture theory are more in line with the current situation of Chinese enterprises, and the negative relationship has a more significant impact on non-state-owned enterprises and enterprises that voluntarily disclose social responsibility reports. In addition,in a good business environment, the negative relationship between the two will be weakened, which may be due to more complete laws and regulations restricting corporate tax avoidance, curbing enterprises’ excessive tax avoidance motives, and at the same time alleviating corporate financing difficulties to a certain extent, further reducing the crowding out effect of enterprises on fulfilling social responsibilities.Based on the empirical analysis results of this paper, four suggestions are put forward to improve the performance of corporate social responsibility and curb excessive tax avoidance of enterprises: improve corporate social responsibility awareness, improve corporate social responsibility evaluation and certification system, reasonably regulate tax behavior, and continuously optimize the business environment. It is hoped that this paper can provide some reference for the research on corporate social responsibility and tax avoidance behavior in China. |
