Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era,and China is at a critical stage of building a modernized economic system and promoting high-quality development. In his speech at the 20 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that the new period should accelerate the construction of a new development pattern and a modern industrial system, and actively build a strong network and digital China. In order to achieve the goal of building a strong socialist modern country,we must continue to play the role of consumption as a "ballast" in the stable operation of our economy, promote the optimization and upgrading of the consumption structure, and seize the major opportunities brought by the new economic growth point of the network economy. With the transformation and upgrading of the economic structure,it is also necessary to pay more attention to the development of the consumption structure and the network economy. Therefore,it is of great value to study the impact of the network economy on the consumption structure of Chinese residents.Based on this, this paper firstly compares the literature related to the development of network economy and residents’ consumption structure, including relevant studies on network economy, residents’ consumption structure, network economy and consumption, and the impact of network economy on residents’ consumption structure.Secondly,by defining relevant concepts and theories, the transmission mechanism of the impact of network economy development on China’s resident consumption structure is explored in three ways: income, transaction cost, and realization of consumer demand, and the current situation of China’s network economy development and resident consumption structure is analyzed on the basis of existing studies.Again,an index system is established to measure the level of China’s network economy development from three levels and five dimensions, and then the network economy development level of 30provinces(except Hong Kong,Macao,Taiwan and Tibet)is measured. Then, based on this quantitative analysis using econometric model, the overall regression analysis was conducted by combining the panel data of 30 provinces(except Hong Kong,Macao,Taiwan and Tibet)in China from 2014 to 2020,using the level of network economy development as the core explanatory variable to measure the development degree of network economy, and the three major types of consumption expenditure of residents to measure the consumption structure, and through sub-regional discussion.further illustrates the role of the development of the network economy in influencing the optimization and upgrading of China’s residents’ consumption structure. The results of the study show that the network economy has a significant positive effect on the survival, development and enjoyment consumption of Chinese residents.Specifically, the network economy mainly has a greater impact on the developmental and enjoyment-oriented consumption of Chinese residents, and a smaller impact on the survival-oriented consumption.Overall, the development of the network economy can,to a certain extent, promote the upgrading and optimization of China’s residents’ consumption structure.By region, the positive effect of the development of the Internet economy on the consumption structure of residents in the eastern region of China is more obvious than that in the central, western, and northeastern regions. Finally, based on the research and empirical findings of this paper, the following countermeasure suggestions are obtained: to continuously promote the development of the Internet economy,to improve the consumption ability of Chinese residents in the context of the Internet economy, and to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of Internet consumers, etc.
