Study On The Influence Mechanism Of Strategic Knowledge Disclosure On Continuous Value Appropriability

Abstract/Summary:
Since the reform and opening up,Chinese latecomers have made great achievements in the beyond catch-up stage by means of imitation,acquisition,cooperation and so on.How to obtain the maximum profit from the innovation achievements,namely the innovation achievements management,has gradually become the focus of the innovation management of these latecomers.To solve this problem,the mainstream view in theory and practice is from the perspective of Knowledge Protection,which emphasizes that firms should protect knowledge well and avoid leakage,so as to occupy the full value of innovation.But recently this view has been challenged,some enterprises are disclosing knowledge consciously and proactively.In other words,these enterprises voluntarily disclose technology or knowledge that could otherwise be reserved exclusively,to the public and even their competitors.But the study found that these "aberrant" behaviors,far from harming the business,could increase the potential value of the business.Some papers even regarded the behavior of knowledge disclosure as a strategic mechanism whicht can reshape the cooperation behavior of other participants in the innovation ecosystem.But some scholars have raised doubts,and still believed that disclosure is bound to aggravate the leakage of core technologies,lose competitive advantages and damage the value of enterprises.This relationship paradox also makes enterprises confused about whether to carry out strategic knowledge disclosure strategy.In order to solve the above confusion,this study combed and analyzed the literature,and believed that the relationship paradox is mainly due to the following three reasons: Firstly,existing research does not distinguish between temporary and continuous value exclusivity.Nevertheless,much of the expected benefit from strategic knowledge disclosure lies in the future.This cross-temporal mechanism implies that a general discussion of the relationship between strategic knowledge disclosure and value exclusivity will lead to different research results.Secondly,current research and practice do not pay attention to the influence of context.In particular,industry characteristics and enterprise characteristics will seriously affect the effect of strategic knowledge disclosure.Thirdly,the existing research lacks quantitative investigation based on large samples.Most of the studies on the emerging topic of strategic knowledge disclosure adopt qualitative methods such as case analysis and theoretical derivation,and it is difficult to get consistent results.Therefore,the study design will be improved respectively to make up for the above deficiencies.(1)The value appropriability will be divided into two dimensions: primary appropriability and generative appropriability.The former can help the enterprise to obtain the maximum share of the current innovation value so as to realize the relatively transient value appropriability,while the latter can help the enterprise to obtain the maximum share of the future innovation value generated in the long run,so as to realize the continuous value appropriability.(2)Based on the background of emerging economy,this study has identified two situational variables: organizational situational factors(technological diversity)and environmental situational factors(competition intensity).(3)This study will conduct a quantitative investigation by collecting 10 years’ panel data of 122 enterprises in two high-tech industries,namely pharmaceutical manufacturing and computer,communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing.In conclusion,this study focuses on the core research question of "the impact of strategic knowledge disclosure behavior on value appropriability",and breaks it down into two related sub-research questions:(1)how strategic knowledge disclosure behavior affects primary appropriability and generative appropriability;(2)study the boundary conditions of the relationship between strategic knowledge disclosure and value appropriability.The results show that strategic knowledge disclosure has a positive effect on both primary appropriability and generative appropriability,and the positive relationship with generative appropriability is more significant.In addition,the intensity of competition will affect the relationship effect.Specifically,competitive intensity negatively moderates the relationship between strategic knowledge disclosure and primary appropriability,while positively moderates the relationship between strategic knowledge disclosure and generative appropriability.However,when the enterprise has a high level of technological diversity,it is easier to obtain temporary and continuous innovation value through strategic knowledge disclosure.By discussing 他the strategic knowledge disclosure,a new corporate practice,this paper breaks the traditional perspective of knowledge protection so as to expand the research horizon of benefiting from innovation.In addition,this study establishes the theoretical framework of how strategic knowledge disclosure can continuously occupy innovation value from two dimensions of primary appropriability and generative appropriability,which can not only enrich the PFI theory,but also help solve the relationship paradox.At the same time,this paper also focuses on the influence of situational factors,which can provide guidance for latecomer enterprises on how to carry out strategic knowledge disclosure and help them obtain sustainable value from innovation.
