Bootlegging is a kind of behavior that employees insist on innovation without the authorization of leaders.With the rapid development of digital economy and information technology,the success of bootlegging has brought revolutionary results and huge innovation benefits to enterprises,such as the well-known Sogou browser and Google’s Gmail,which have brought breakthrough development to enterprises.Its importance can be seen from this.Therefore,it has become a hot issue of organizational management to explore the influencing factors that induce employees’ bootlegging behavior.Previous research on the antecedents of bootlegging mostly started from the aspects of leadership style,organizational atmosphere,etc.,while the research on individual traits and cognitive perspective and the specific trigger mechanism were less.Most of them were based on the theoretical basis of social cognitive theory,resource conservation theory,etc.,while few studies explored the relationship between specific personality traits and subsequent cognitive and behavioral responses from the perspective of self-regulation.Self-regulation theory points out that in order to narrow the gap between present and the desired goal,individuals will conduct self-regulation of cognition and behavior.Narcissistic admiration take the maintenance of grandiose self as their primary goal.They are full of confidence in their skills and ability to perform broader tasks.They will improve themselves and pursue uniqueness.Therefore,they have both confidence motivation and the ability to undertake tasks beyond their work roles,that is,enhance the sense of role breadth self-efficacy.Individuals with high role breath self-efficacy believe that they have the ability to complete more complex and challenging tasks,and are more likely to break the rules and implement innovative activities,that is,bootlegging.In addition,the self-regulation theory also points out the interaction between external environment and individual factors.The innovation support atmosphere provided by the organization can create positive psychological resources and work resources to employee,so that employees have stronger internal motivation to practice innovative ideas that violate the organization’s norms,and create benefits for the organization.Therefore,based on the self-regulation theory,this study introduces the role breadth self-efficacy as the intermediary variable,and the perceived organizational support for creativity as the moderated variable to explore the internal mechanism and boundary conditions of narcissistic admiration affecting employees’ bootlegging.The research collected 242 valid questionnaires and uses SPSS23.0 and AMOS26.0statistical software for analysis.The results show that narcissistic admiration has a positive impact on employees’ bootlegging;Role breadth self-efficacy partially mediates between narcissistic admiration and bootlegging behavior;The perceived organizational support for creativity positively moderates the relationship between role breadth self-efficacy and bootlegging,and positively moderates the intermediary role of role breadth self-efficacy between narcissistic admiration and bootlegging.This study builds a mechanism model of the influence of narcissistic admiration on employees’ bootlegging behavior,trying to clarify the path and boundary conditions of the influence of narcissistic admiration on employees’ bootlegging behavior,which has the following significance in theoretical research and practical management.From the theoretical point,firstly,this study enriches the research on the antecedent mechanism of bootlegging,and expands the effect of narcissistic admiration.By choosing the dimension of narcissistic admiration,we respond to the research controversy of different influence results of narcissism,and understand the relationship between individual factors and emotional and behavioral responses from the perspective of self-regulation;Secondly,it reveals the mediating mechanism of role breadth self-efficacy between narcissistic admiration and employees’ bootlegging behavior,and deepens the understanding of the mechanism of narcissistic admiration,a personality trait that affects bootlegging from the perspective of self-regulation theory;Finally,the moderating effect of perceived organizational support for creativity is discussed,and the enhancement or inhibition effect of antecedents in situations similar to behavior performance is studied,which provides a new idea for the selection of moderating variables in subsequent studies.In terms of management practice,this study inspires managers to correctly understand and guide employees’ bootlegging behavior,optimize the organizational process specification.Meanwhile,this study improving the tolerance of employees’ bootlegging and adopting reasonable incentive policies,and prevent employees’ behavior from deviating from the organizational goals,then impeding the overall development of the organization;Secondly,it helps inspire managers to create an organizational atmosphere conducive to employees’ innovation and strengthen the construction of a supportive environment;Finally,this study will help enterprises to dialectically treat narcissistic groups in the process of talent selection and training,adopt appropriate ways to encourage and guide employees to improve self-confidence and personal quality,stimulate the advantages of narcissistic admiration,and bring breakthrough development to the organization.
