In today’s social media era,the information disclosure behavior of users is crucial for the development of online social platforms. In previous studies, privacy concerns have been considered to be an important factor preventing users from disclosing information. However,in recent years, more and more researchers have verified that privacy concerns can have a positive impact on self-disclosure from the perspective of risk compensation. The positive association between privacy concern and self-disclosure is also known as the privacy paradox in existing literature. However, the existing researches on risk compensation and privacy paradox are still limited in the field of information systems.Through literature review, this paper finds that there are still a large number of inconsistent conclusions about the impact mechanism of privacy concerns on self-disclosure in existing research, and whether there is a privacy risk compensation process has also been controversial. In addition, the boundary conditions for privacy risk compensation are still unclear, that is,it is not clear under what conditions or factors the impact of risk compensation effects can be more significant and become the main impact mechanism between privacy concerns and self-disclosure.Study I mainly explored whether the privacy risk compensation process exists in the social network environment.Firstly, based on the research of privacy paradox and risk compensation theory, this paper proposes a basic conceptual model of privacy risk compensation effect. Then, this study collects much sample data from 25 empirical studies and uses meta-analysis methods to validate the model. The research results show that the basic model of the privacy risk compensation process is greatly supported. The significance of this study is to confirm the existence of a positive impact mechanism between privacy concerns and self-disclosure,which is dominated by the risk compensation effect. This provides a research basis and research clues for exploring the effectiveness of privacy risk compensation effects in the following study.Based on the important role of psychological ownership in privacy behavior decision-making,Study Ⅱ mainly explores the important impact of psychological ownership on the effectiveness of privacy risk compensation process.Based on the results of meta-analysis,this paper proposes a moderated mediation effect model for the privacy risk compensation process from the perspective of psychological ownership of private information. This study conducted an online survey of 300 Facebook users and tested the model using empirical research. All hypotheses in the model are supported. The results indicate that the risk compensation effect between privacy concerns and self-disclosure is positively moderated by the psychological ownership of private information. The significance of this study is to combine the psychological ownership theory with the risk compensation effect, reveal the important impact of psychological ownership in regulating the process of privacy risk compensation, and expand the existing researches on risk compensation and privacy paradox. The results encourage social media platforms to provide more functional design elements to support users’ privacy protection and meet their motivational needs for psychological ownership of private information.
