| Urbanization is the inevitable trend of economic development. The new concept of "people-oriented" urbanization was put forward in the 18 th CPC National Congress.Energy is an important material driving force to promote the process of urbanization, and urbanization is the key factor to drive the growth of energy consumption.Especially in countries with rapid urbanization, the relationship between urbanization and energy consumption is closer. In the process of urbanization, the industrial structure, residents’ consumption patterns and urban planning show the characteristics of phased changes, resulting in the corresponding threshold effect and phased growth of energy consumption.EKC theory shows that the energy consumption problems faced by a region at different stages of economic development are also different.Based on the summary of the factors affecting energy consumption in the process of urbanization: economic development level, industrial structure, technological progress, economic openness and environmental regulation, and according to the changing characteristics of China’s urbanization and energy consumption, this thesis uses the level of economic development as the threshold variable to study the impact of urbanization on per capita energy consumption in areas with different levels of economic development and its intermediary path.On the basis of summarizing the relevant literature and using the provincial panel data from 2005 to 2019,this thesis first tests the existence of the economic development level threshold of the research samples, and divides the samples according to the economic development level threshold. Then, based on the intermediary effect model, this thseis tests the impact mechanism of urbanization on energy consumption from three aspects: industrial structure, technological progress and investment demand, and deeply discusses the following two problems: first, whether there is a threshold effect of economic development level in the impact of urbanization on energy consumption;Second, what are the action paths and differences of the impact of urbanization on energy consumption under different levels of economic development. The results show that both population urbanization and spatial urbanization have threshold effects on per capita energy consumption, but the threshold values are different. When the level of regional economic development exceeds the threshold, the role of urbanization in promoting per capita energy consumption is enhanced. There are significant differences in the transmission paths of the intermediary effects of industrial structure, technological progress and investment demand in different stages of economic development. |
