Covid-19 has been spreading globally since December 2019.The epidemic has disrupted the normal operation of the international community and changed people’s living space and way of communication.The major public health emergency is not only a medical issue,but also a social issue.Faced with the major public health emergency,the mainstream media has the obligation to report facts.Their reporting strategies will affect people’s cognitive attitudes and coping measures,and even affect social stability and national image.This study uses the constructed week sample method to analyze 1349 news reports taken from the News Coronavirus section of The Times from 30 January,2020 to 23 February,2022.Using the research method of content analysis and framing analysis,the study summarizes the regularities of the text news framing based on the General Frame theory by Semetko and Valkenburg and combined with research achievements of Chen Yang,Zhou Xiang and other scholars.Besides,the study also summarizes the characteristics of the visual framework based on Kress and van Leeuwen’s grammar framework of visual image analysis.Then,from the perspective of Frame Hermeneutics and Reflective Hermeneutics,the study discusses whether The Times reflects on the epidemic and the political system,economic structure,social contradictions and cultural concepts behind it,and finds the characteristics of reflexivity in four aspects: continuous reflection,epidemic community,popularization of science and empathic experience to sort out the social issues and optimization mechanisms and experience the national memory of Britain.Finally,by exploring the influence of ideology,commercial interests and cultural background on the reflective practice of mainstream media,the study analyzes the limitations of it and then provides universal references for news reporting practices during the major public health emergency from three aspects of explain modernity,reflect on modernity and respond to modernity.
