The combination of science and society will inevitably lead to controversial social science issues(Socio-Scientific Issues,SSI),which reflect the interaction between social problems and scientific development.It not only completely considers the relationship between science,technology,society and environment,but also incorporates economic,ethical,moral and political factors into the issues.Therefore,compared with STS(Science/Technology/Society,STS)and STSE(Science/Technology/Society/Environment,STSE),SSI has a deeper connotative meaning.SSI teaching helps students to establish correct values,improve students’ awareness of civic participation and social responsibility,and cultivate students’ scientific literacy of seeking knowledge and daring to question.Biology is a science that studies the phenomena of life and the laws of life activities,which has a great impact on society,economy and human lives.The application of SSI in biology education can effectively implement the fundamental education task and achieve the curriculum goal of cultivating students’ core literacy.This dissertation uses the method of literature review to define the concepts and theoretical basis related to the integration of SSI into biology teaching in senior high schools.It also takes the approach of questionnaire to test the current situation of applying SSI teaching in biology education.According to the current situation of SSI teaching,combined with the characteristics of biology teaching and the requirements of curriculum standards,three teaching cases named Ecological Restoration of Lutang Mining Area in Chenzhou City,Organ Transplantation and Gene Editing were designed and implemented under the guidance of Situated Learning,Zone of Proximal Development Theory and Social Science Reasoning Theory.Finally,the author has done a rethinking of SSI application in biology teaching according to the reflections of students’ class feelings and the results are as the followings.(1)Most teachers and students do not know much about SSI teaching,but they all agree that SSI teaching plays a key role in cultivating students’ abilities and improving core scientific literacy.On the contrary,teachers who apply SSI in their work only account for a small part,so the current situation is not optimistic.Teachers’ abilities,school supports and students’ qualities are the important factors that affect the application of SSI teaching in senior high school biology education.(2)It is feasible and effective to implement SSI in biology teaching of senior high schools.The SSI-based biology teaching in high schools is a way to integrate the subject knowledge with social science issues,so that students can apply their knowledge to solve,explore,experience,and reflect on the intricate relationships between science,ethics,policy,and society.This education model can provide students an opportunity to participate in social decision making,develop the core literacy of biology and improve students’ comprehensive ability.(3)In order to apply SSI teaching in biology education in senior high schools,we should strengthen teacher training,improve teachers’ professional ability,give full play to home-school cooperation,develop various resources,stimulate students’ learning desire and guide active learning behavior.This dissertation can provide teaching materials and reference for senior teachers to apply SSI teaching in senior high school biology education.
