School bullying has a long-term negative impact on the healthy growth of young people.Although the country has issued a number of policy documents to guide the prevention and treatment of bullying in recent years,it is still a widespread social problem. In the case of school bullying, apart from the bully and the bullied, there is also a large number of participants-bystanders.The attitude and behavior of bystanders in the face of bullying will have an important impact on the subsequent development and outcome of the bullying incident. When bystanders watch the bullying incident but do nothing, the bullying behavior will often worsen. How do bystanders react to bullying in junior high school? What are the behaviors of "inaction" ?What is the reason behind the behavior? What intervention strategies should be put in place to make a difference? In order to solve the above problems, based on the combing and analysis of domestic and foreign studies on bystanders of school bullying, this study used the in-depth interview method to investigate the reaction of bystanders of school bullying in junior high school and the reasons behind their "inaction" behavior. With reference to the research methods and tools of Laura Wood et al.,the interview outline was designed in combination with the existing research results and the purpose and significance of this study.Pre-interview was conducted before each formal interview, and problems existing in the interview outline were modified.Due to the epidemic, the interview was mainly conducted online.Target sampling method was adopted for the interview.38 people were selected for the first interview, and 29 "inaction" bystanders were selected for the second interview.Although the interview outline is constructed in advance,in order to explore the real thoughts of the interviewees, questions and supplements are made according to their answers during the interview. After the interview, the interview data were transcribed into text for collation and analysis, and the research method of grounded theory was used to encode the interview contents at three levels from the bottom up.In the process of coding, review and correction are carried out constantly to ensure the generality and accuracy of coding results.Combined with the results of coding, this paper analyzes the "inaction" behavior of bystanders in junior high school bullying and its causes.Through the study found that junior high school bullying bystanders "inaction" behavior types can be roughly divided into two categories: differential "inaction" and "inaction"."Inaction" is caused by a variety of reasons, the underlying reasons mainly include "ignorance",that is,the lack of correct cognition of bullying or anti-bullying knowledge;"Helplessness",i.e.lack of skills or resources to intervene in bullying incidents;"Fear," fear of the bully,of being involved in a bullying incident, and of damaged relationships;"Indifference",that is,varying degrees of indifference to school bullying.Aiming at the reasons for bystanders’ inaction in junior high school bullying,Schools and teachers can promote bystanders to establish correct anti-bullying cognition, improve bystanders’ ability to intervene in bullying cases, provide adequate protection for bystanders to intervene in bullying cases and encourage bystanders to take active responsibility for intervention,so as to improve the possibility of bystanders to do something in the face of school bullying.
