Abstract/Summary:
As the advancement of educational reform, education modernization cannot be achieved without the support of information technology. The trend of integrating information technology with education teaching becomes more and more obvious.Smartphone has the advantages of simple access, easy operation, and accurate measurement.Experimental teaching in Physics would bring great convenience to experimental measurement by smartphone sensors, increase the interest of experimental teaching, stimulate students’ learning interest, and cultivate students’ scientific inquiry ability. My Master’ thesis discusses the literature related to the design of physics experiments based on smartphone sensors in China and other countries in the world, and have analyzed the current status of domestic and international research on this topic.I found that most of the current research focused on the mechanics section, whereas the thermal section was less involved. Most of the cell phone sensors were utilized in these studies, such as acceleration sensors, pressure sensors, signal generators & receivers, but the use of barometric sensors for cell phones is rarely addressed. In the context of this research,we designed several middle school physics experiments based on the smartphone barometric pressure sensor. The first part of the thesis is to define the concepts involved in the study, and to discuss the advantages and educational significance of using smartphone sensors were analyzed for physics experiments based on the Constructivist theory, the Dale’s "tower of experience" theory and the Core Literacy in Physics. The basic principles of secondary school physics experiment design were summarized. The sensor, the cell phone software,Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite, were introduced. In the next part, the thesis sorted out the mechanics and thermal knowledge points involving air pressure in junior and senior high school physics textbooks, and conducted experimental designs for three experiments in the thesis-such as investigating the relationship between air pressure and altitude with a smartphone air pressure sensor, measuring liquid density based on a smartphone air pressure sensor, and verifying Charlies’ Law with a smartphone air pressure sensor-to put these three experimental designs into practice, demonstrated the experimental operations. The experimental data were analyzed so as to verify the feasibility of the experimental designs. An instructional design for one of the experiments(measuring liquid density based on a smartphone barometric pressure sensor)was conducted to explore the application of a physics experiment by a smartphone barometric pressure sensor in a real classroom setting and reflect the value of the experimental design. At the end of the thesis,we presented an overall reflection and summary of this study. It is found that based on the smartphone air pressure sensor, the experiments of mechanics and thermodynamics on secondary school physics can visualize the abstract physical quantities, quantify the qualitative experiments, measure the materials easily and accurately by air pressure sensor inserted in the smartphone, which facilitated the online physics experiment teaching. It is hoped that this study would enrich the resources of secondary school physics experiments and provide more ideas and methods for secondary school physics experimental teaching.
