Investigating Factors Motivating Learners To Achieve Quality Grades In Mathematics

Achievement and motivation are very important concepts when it comes to ensuring or obtaining quality grades in a Mathematics class.This study therefore focused on investigating factors motivating learners to achieve quality grades in the Mathematics subject,a case study of three secondary schools in Windhoek,Namibia.Schools in Namibia,especially secondary schools in recent years have been experiencing a reduction in achievement,in Mathematics.The main objective for this investigation is therefore to find out the factors motivating learners to achieve quality grades in Mathematics.Based on the above statement,this study focused on the factors that motivated learners and how it contributes to learner’s achievement in Mathematics.This study further investigated the achievement in Mathematics putting into consideration how learners when motivated attain good grades.The data collected from the learners and teachers who participated in this study were analysed using the coding and making use of field notes methods for analysing qualitative data,in order to come up with the findings of this study.The results show that most of the learners are motivated by social factors rather than by the drive within themselves.The social factors that motivate most of the learners include;career professionals(like Doctors,Pilots,Engineers),awards and recognition,mentors and motivational speakers.Most of the learners are also motivated by the urge to have their families living in safer environments and suburbs.
