The detection rate of problem behaviors among primary and secondary school students in China is increasing year by year, especially for upper elementary school students who are in early adolescence, the occurrence of problem behaviors is more frequent, and if their problem behaviors are not handled correctly,it will not only affect their physical and mental development and social adaptation, but also seriously continue into adulthood and turn into criminal behaviors. It is imperative to help primary and secondary school students reduce the occurrence of problem behaviors. Therefore, based on moral development stage theory, general stress theory, and ecosystem theory, this paper conducts an empirical study on problem behaviors of upper elementary school students through a combination of cross-sectional and longitudinal research methods to achieve the research purpose of reducing the occurrence of problem behaviors. After statistical analysis of the literature and questionnaires, the following findings were obtained:(1)There were no significant differences in problem behaviours between gender,left-behind children and only children.(2)Peer bullying, social anxiety and problem behaviors were significantly and positively related to each other.(3)Social anxiety mediated part of the relationship between peer bullying and problem behaviour in a cross-sectional study.(4)Peer bullying and problem behaviour showed significant changes across the three measures.(5)The positive correlations between peer bullying, social anxiety and problem behaviour were significant across the three measures for both simultaneity and successiveness.(6)Peer bullying in the previous moment in the longitudinal study did not predict social anxiety in the subsequent moment, social anxiety in the previous moment predicted problem behaviour in the subsequent moment, and social anxiety played a mediating role between peer bullying and problem behaviour. There was no mediating role between peer bullying and problem behaviours. In summary, the cross-sectional findings suggest that peer bullying can influence problem behaviour through social anxiety.Longitudinal findings suggest that peer bullying cannot influence problem behaviour through social anxiety, but that social anxiety can directly influence problem behaviour.Based on this, this paper gives targeted strategies and suggestions, including reducing the phenomenon of peer bullying and improving students’ social interaction and emotional regulation skills,in the hope of providing lessons for reducing problem behaviours among primary and secondary school students.
