Today,China’s history education reform attaches importance to cultivating students’ core literacy in history subjects, and history research study is still an important path.High school students have an active mind and are interested in many events in the history of the Cold War,but they have little opportunity to practice because of the time-bound nature of the classroom and the lack of a suitable vehicle to carry research questions.Based on the author’s reading and teaching practice,I found that British author Frederic Forsyth’s Cold War-themed historical novel, with its grand Cold War background and rigorous and rich historical details, can precisely arouse students’ interest, provide research materials and link the research path. Therefore, this paper aims to select Forsyth’s novel "The Negotiator" as a carrier and apply it to the research study practice of Cold War history in high school, trying to explore a unique historical learning path of "taking a materialist view of history, looking at Cold War literature carefully and dialectically, and sifting through and discovering the value of the historical materials behind it".First of all, this paper explains the principles and methods of the study practice and the specific implementation plan and program, based on the analysis of the novel’s content, and takes "the 1980 s,the U.S.-Soviet strategic game around oil and energy" as the study theme.Secondly, the author guides students around the main topic, through reading the original text and related historical documents, independent questions, grouping to determine the specific issues of the topic of study and to conduct their own investigations, and finally form the results of independent study of each group of students, the implementation of disciplinary literacy training. Finally, the author collects students’ detailed questions and materials to further identify the historical value of Forsyth’s novel, explore its feasibility and methodology as a historical material applied to the teaching practice of the unified high school history textbook curriculum, and form a case summary corresponding to the corresponding curriculum as an extension of this study.Through practice, the author believes that although the application of Forsyth’s Cold War-themed historical novels to history study and teaching activities is an experimental pedagogical experiment, the study process of reading the novels, refining the logic of the main idea, developing one’s own topic, collecting historical materials, and exploring them can objectively expand students’ horizons of history study, strengthen their awareness of the dialectical view of fictional works from the materialistic view of history, and train them to explore historical information and refine the core logic of history. It is also worthwhile to further develop students’ ability to collect and organize historical materials based on spatial and temporal clues and to ask independent questions to form objective historical interpretations.
