ObjectsIn recent decades,significant changes in lifestyle such as decreased physical activity and increased sedentary behavior have led to a continuous decline in the physical health level of adolescents,mainly manifested by a rapid upward trend in the prevalence of overweight and obesity,especially a sharp increase in the prevalence of "central obesity".With in-depth research on obesity,researchers have found that obesity not only causes chronic diseases,but also has a negative impact on executive function(EF).Currently,research on the relationship between body composition and executive function mostly relies on the Body Mass Index(BMI)as a criterion for judging obesity,while research on the correlation between waist circumference(WC)and obesity type and executive function is relatively limited.Therefore,this study will characterize adolescent BMI,waist circumference,and executive function levels,and explore the relationship between adolescent BMI,waist circumference,and executive function,thereby providing theoretical and practical basis for improving adolescent executive function and physical and mental health.MethodsIn this study,stratified cluster random sampling method was used to randomly select adolescents aged 13 to 18 from five cities,namely Shanghai,Taizhou,Anqing,Suzhou,and Shangrao,to conduct BMI,waist circumference,and executive function tests.Abnormal and invalid data were excluded,and 818 students were selected as the study subjects.The basic characteristics of BMI,waist circumference,and executive function were described and analyzed.Single factor analysis of variance was used to analyze and compare the executive function levels of different BMI,waist circumference,and obesity categories.Linear regression was used to analyze the relationship between BMI,waist circumference,and obesity categories and executive function.ResultsBasic characteristics of BMI,waist circumference,and executive function:1)The BMI of boys aged 13-18 increased from 20.63kg/m2 to 24.14kg/m2,and girls increased from 18.39kg/m2 to 20.72kg/m2;The waist circumference of boys aged13-18 increased from 71.53 cm to 82.83 cm,while that of girls increased from 64 cm to70.42 cm.The BMI and waist circumference of boys are higher than those of girls at all ages;2)Taking BMI as the evaluation benchmark,the detection rates of overweight and obesity in boys(15.42%,12.94%)were higher than those in girls(10.58%,5.53%);3)The detection rate based on waist circumference: The detection rate of high waist circumference in boys(29.60%)is higher than that in girls(12.98%);4)Based on BMI and waist circumference,the detection rate of central obesity in boys(92.31%)was higher than that in girls(78.26%);5)The overall EF level of adolescents shows a trend of improvement with age.Comparison of BMI,waist circumference,and executive function:1)There were differences in the performance of inhibition function,refresh function,and conversion function among adolescents with different BMI(P<0.05);2)There were differences in the performance of inhibition function,refresh function,and conversion function among adolescents with different waist circumference(P<0.05).Linear regression analysis of BMI,waist circumference,and executive function:1)Taking the normal group as a reference(based on BMI),the inhibitory response time of the obese group was 5.197 ms higher than that of the obese group;The 1-back and 2-back reaction times in the obese group were 43.907 ms and 34.233 ms higher than those in the obese group,respectively;The conversion function response time in the obese group was 10.915 ms higher than that in the obese group;Compared with normal weight adolescents,there was a statistically significant difference in refresh function performance between obese adolescents and normal weight adolescents(P<0.05);2)Taking the high value of normal waist circumference as a reference,the inhibitory functional response time in the high waist circumference group was 37.568 ms higher than that in the high waist circumference group,respectively;The 1-back and 2-back reaction times in the high waist circumference group were 64.570 ms and 41.174 ms higher than those in the high waist circumference group,respectively;The conversion function response time in the high waist circumference group was 16.487 ms higher than that in the high waist circumference group.Compared with adolescents with high waist circumference and normal adolescents with high waist circumference,there was a statistically significant difference in the performance of various subfunctions of executive function(P<0.05).3)Compared with peripheral obesity,the transition function response time of adolescents with central obesity was 40.998 ms higher,with a statistically significant difference(P<0.05).Conclusions1.Based on BMI,the refresh function level of obese adolescents is lower than that of normal adolescents;2.Based on waist circumference,the executive function level of adolescents with high waist circumference is lower than that of normal adolescents with high waist circumference;3.Compared to peripheral obese adolescents,central obese adolescents have lower levels of conversion function.
