| As an important tool in geography and a compulsory content in the new curriculum, map reading ability is of great significance.Map language is a type of non-continuous text, and its reading methods and teaching strategies can serve as a reference for the reading of other non-continuous texts. This study aims to explore effective teaching methods for improving junior high school students’ map reading and comprehension abilities, cultivating students’ geographical literacy and information literacy, and adapting to the development of the future information age.Focusing on map reading in the junior high school geography curriculum, the study subjects were sixth-grade students. The teaching practices of experimental and control groups were examined to analyze the impact of different teaching methods on map reading ability. The results show that the following teaching methods can effectively improve students’ map reading ability: 1.Creating situational contexts and emphasizing real-life scenarios;2.Guiding inquiry-based learning;3.Employing diversified teaching strategies and providing students with multi-sensory experiences. These methods have promotion value in map teaching. Moreover, the study found that these teaching methods also have application potential in the reading teaching of other non-continuous texts, such as: 1.Focusing on the purpose of expression;2.Prioritizing scattered information in charts;3.More real-life scenario experiences and practical exercises. However, due to limitations such as time, class hours, sample size, and research experience, this study could not evaluate the specific effectiveness of each method in detail, and could only verify the overall effectiveness of the teaching methods. This paper is divided into six parts: Part one is the introduction;part two elaborates on the definition of concepts and theoretical basis;part three investigates the students’ situation and map reading ability, using questionnaires and pre-tests,and analyzes the survey results with statistical methods to understand the students’ map reading foundation and difficulties;part four focuses on teaching design and research, detailing the methods and teaching suggestions for non-continuous texts in geography teaching;part five presents the results and analysis of the post-test experiment, showcasing the research results and application effects;the last part concludes the study and looks ahead, summarizing the achievements and limitations of the research, and proposing future research prospects. |
