Cultivating students’ key competency has been the direction of China’s education reform and the scientific inquiry literacy plays an important role in the key competency of biological disciplines.5E teaching model has been widely used abroad for cultivating students’ scientific inquiry competency and its unique teaching stages and characteristics is great helpful for promoting students’ scientific inquiry competency.The study attempts to apply 5E teaching model in high school biology course for cultivating students’ scientific inquiry competency.The literature searching,test survey,questionnaire survey and interview were adopted in this research.The elements of scientific inquiry literacy were classified into three parts,namely,ability elements,cognitive elements,and emotional elements,based on analyzing the application and characteristics of 5E teaching model according relevant literature and summarizing the connotation,research status and evaluation methods of scientific inquiry competency.Taking middle school T in city H as the research object,we interviewed the teachers about the status quo of scientific inquiry competency cultivating and teaching mode and discussed the feasibility to apply 5E teaching model to biology teaching in high school.Through searching 5E teaching model related literature and analyzing the result of interview with the front-line teachers,we made formulated the teaching strategy of 5E teaching model and further conducted the teaching design according to the content of the textbook.According to the elements of scientific inquiry and previous research,the scientific inquiry competency assessment scale was developed and was implemented practically after its reliability and validity was tested.Two parallel classes in Grade 2 of middle school T in city H were selected for analyzing the influence of 5E teaching model on scientific inquiry competency.After one semester of teaching practice using 5E teaching model,the scientific inquiry assessment scale was used to assess the elements of scientific inquiry competency,cognitive elements,and emotional elements of the test class and the control class.Meanwhile,students’ academic achievements before and after the teaching experiment were compared and analyzed.The research results showed that(1)5E teaching model significantly improved the students’ scientific inquiry competency;that(2)5E teaching model significantly promoted the students’ academic performance.This research theoretically and practically analyzed influence of the5 E teaching model on promoting students’ scientific inquiry competency.The teaching strategy of 5E teaching model was proposed according to the content of biology textbooks and was implemented in practice.The conclusions obtained in the research provide a reference for front-line teachers to apply 5E teaching model in cultivating students’ key competency in biology teaching.
