At present, the fast pace of social life requires people to have efficient study and work, but students in school have a common problem of procrastination, especially the academic procrastination of middle school students seems to be more and more prominent.Academic procrastination not only affects students’academic performance, but is often accompanied by negative emotional experiences, such as anxiety and depression, which affect an individual’s physical and mental health status. Therefore,it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study on the academic procrastination status of middle school students. These negative emotional experiences of procrastinators are ultimately rooted in their irrational beliefs.Perfectionism and fear of failure are common irrational beliefs of procrastinators. In this study,we aim to explore the academic procrastination of junior high school students from the perspectives of students’negative perfectionism and academic self-handicapping,in order to reveal the correlations and mechanisms of interaction between these three, and to provide new ideas and methods for preventing and improving their academic procrastination and enhancing their learning efficiency. This study consists of two parts:in the first part,we aim to reveal the current situation of negative perfectionism, academic self-handicapping and academic procrastination among junior high school students, and to explore the correlation and influence mechanism between negative perfectionism, academic self-handicapping and academic procrastination among junior high school students;in the second part, there is a qualitative study, which aims to enrich the research results of the first part through semi-structured interviews. In this study,427 junior high school students in a middle school in Hebei Province were surveyed and studied using questionnaires, and the data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and correlations using SPSS,and the mediating effect model was tested using PROCESS,and then by further analysis, the following conclusions were finally obtained.(1)There are correlated between negative perfectionism, academic self-handicapping and academic procrastination among junior high school students,in which negative perfectionism positively predicted academic procrastination, academic self-handicapping positively predicted academic procrastination, and academic self-handicapping positively predicted academic procrastination.(2)Junior high school students’ academic self-handicapping partially mediated the relationship between negative perfectionism and academic procrastination, with negative perfectionism predicting academic procrastination both directly and indirectly through academic self-handicapping.(3)In the qualitative study,it was found that it is possible to improve the negative perfectionism cognition and academic self-handicapping of junior high school students, and ultimately reduce the level of academic procrastination, which has positive implications. In this study,we investigate the relationship between three variables:negative perfectionism, academic self-handicapping,and academic procrastination, which not only complements the research on negative perfectionism and academic self-handicapping,but also promotes the further enrichment and comprehensiveness of the research on the influencing factors of academic procrastination in China, and provides new ideas for the prevention and improvement of academic procrastination of junior high school students,as well as provides relevant theoretical support and practical basis for educators to conduct practical educational activities.
