With the deepening of reform and opening up,the scale of private colleges and universities has been expanding. However, there are obvious differences in the development of private colleges in different regions, showing unbalanced distribution characteristics. As a strong support for local economic development, private colleges and universities train and transport practical and applied talents for social development. The unbalanced distribution of private colleges and universities has a long-term impact on the regional social and economic development.Although some scholars have paid attention to the regional distribution of private colleges and universities,it is a pity that the research only stays on the static analysis of cross-section data, but lacks the dynamic analysis of longitudinal data. Therefore, this paper will deeply study the regional distribution of private colleges and universities from the perspective of dynamic analysis.Combing the facts and data of the regional distribution of private colleges and universities, expounds the development and evolution of the regional distribution of private colleges and universities and the current characteristics.Based on the panel data of 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities from 2004 to 2020,a model is constructed to explore the factors affecting the regional distribution of private colleges and universities from five dimensions: the total size of social population, the level of regional economic development, the guarantee of higher education funds, the scale of existing public colleges and universities and the relationship between the supply of higher education.Guangdong,Henan and Shaanxi provinces are selected as the case study, and the factors influencing the regional distribution of private colleges and universities are analyzed systematically. It is found that the regional distribution of private colleges and universities keeps developing and evolving. From the perspective of regional distribution, the increment from most to least is in the western, eastern, central and northeast regions, and the growth rate from fast to slow is in the western, central, eastern and northeast regions. From the provincial distribution, private colleges and universities fluctuate, while public colleges and universities steadily increase. From the perspective of city distribution, private colleges and universities are concentrated in provincial capitals. With the continuous improvement of economic level, the proportion of provincial capitals decreases year by year, while that of non-provincial capitals increases year by year.At present, the scale of private undergraduate colleges exceeds that of private specialized colleges, while the scale of public undergraduate colleges is lower than that of public specialized colleges. The categories of running private colleges and universities are mainly concentrated in comprehensive, science and technology, finance and economics. The current situation of regional social population, the level of regional economic development, the existing scale of public colleges and universities, the supply and demand relationship of higher education are the important factors affecting the regional distribution of private colleges and universities, but the guarantee of higher education funds is limited. An in-depth analysis of the case shows that the development of private colleges and universities in Guangdong is mainly influenced by solid economic foundation, innovative ideas, rich educational resources and strong educational demand, while the development of private colleges and universities in Henan is mainly influenced by local policy support, the needs of the rise of Central Plains, weak higher education and large school-age population. The development of private colleges and universities in Shaanxi Province is mainly influenced by loose policy environment, rich educational resources, educational concept innovation and talent effect.
