Since the 21st century, with the continuous advancement of the technological revolution and the rapid development of the information society, talent training has been facing new challenges. In this context, the new round of curriculum reform of basic education in China focuses on developing students’ core literacy and cultivating innovative practical talents who can adapt to the development of the world.Primary school mathematics subject also regards the development of mathematics core literacy as the basic training goal.Project-based learning,as an exploratory teaching mode,is of great significance in promoting the development of students’ core literacy in mathematics, especially in cultivating students’ higher-order thinking ability such as problem-solving ability, practical innovation ability and cooperative communication ability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the design and practice of elementary school mathematics instruction based on project-based learning and to propose recommendations related to the design of elementary school mathematics instruction based on project-based learning.Firstly, this study systematically reviews the meaning, concept, characteristics, elements, and operational steps of project-based learning, laying the foundation for subsequent exploration.Secondly, based on Design Teaching Method,Social constructivism, and Cognitive Discovery Learning Theory, this study combines the characteristics of teaching primary school mathematics to construct a project-based learning model for primary school mathematics. It also puts forward the principles, elements, and application process for designing project-based learning for primary school mathematics.Thirdly, the study designed and implemented a project-based learning unit on teaching the circle in elementary school mathematics, including clarifying the knowledge framework, determining the project theme, integrating teaching content and formulate continuous project plans, carrying out project exploration based on a driving question, producing project work based on project tasks, public reporting, showcasing the results of multiple types of projects, setting up a review panel and conducting multi-angle project evaluation.Through the questionnaire survey and the measurement of mathematical problem-solving ability after practice, this survey analyzes the students’ knowledge mastery situation and the change of mathematical problem-solving ability before and after the learning activity. The study also employed interviews to understand the changes in students’ attitudes towards mathematics learning at different levels before and after engaging in project-based learning activities,as well as their real experiences during such activities. The study shows that the project-based learning is not significant for improving students’ academic performance, but it is significant for improving students’ mathematical problem-solving ability and students’interest in learning.Through the design and implementation of project-based learning in the primary school mathematics subject, this study enriches the research of primary school mathematics teaching research, and provides a reference for the project-based learning teaching design.
