The General High School Mathematics Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition Revised 2020)proposes that the high school mathematics curriculum should take students’ development as the root to implement the fundamental task of moral education thus developing and improving students’ core competencies in mathematics.In order to integrate core literacy into the high school mathematics classroom,problem string teaching has made its way into the teachers’ vision.This thesis examines how to design high-quality problem strings and how to integrate core competencies into problem strings to contribute to the development of both teachers and students.It can enhance the teacher’s role as a "leader" in teaching and learning activities,as well as enable students to engage in independent inquiry,which has both theoretical and practical benefits for teaching today.The author of this thesis used questionnaires and interviews to investigate high school mathematics teachers in two middle schools in Yueyang City based on practice.Some teachers were also interviewed and listened to their lessons in the field.The questionnaires and interviews revealed that the teachers did not have a deep understanding of core competencies and were not familiar with the theory of problem string teaching.Some teachers would use the question string teaching but the frequency was relatively low.Most teachers support the teaching effect of integrating core competencies into question strings,but they cannot find suitable question strings.Through practical cases,the design strategies of classroom sessions that integrate core competencies into the problem strings are proposed.In another word,the problem strings are designed in the introduction of scenarios using realistic,mathematical,and scientific scenarios.For example,the problem strings are designed in the knowledge generation of concepts and exercises.Designing problem strings for error-prone exercises and variation problems in example teaching.Three levels of problem strings are designed in classroom summaries to train and improve students’ core literacy skills,such as knowledge,skills and emotional values.Based on the requirements of the new curriculum and the high school mathematics textbook,two teaching cases are provided,which are "The Concept of Logarithmic Functions" and the exercise lesson "Operations on Sets".Four strategies are fully used in these two cases to train students’ core qualities and competencies.This thesis draws the following conclusions from the analysis of questionnaires,teaching strategies and cases of instructional design:(1)core literacy points to the direction of instructional design;(2)problem string teaching promotes the improvement of teaching effectiveness.
