As a discipline, geography is both a natural science and a social science, occupies an important position in the modern scientific system and plays a very important role in solving the problems of population, resources, environment and development. Therefore, how to improve students’ motivation to learn geography is an important issue that educators need to consider. The ARCS model of motivation was proposed by a psychology professor at the University of California and includes four motivational elements: Attention,Relevance,Confidence, and Satisfaction. In this paper, based on this model, literature analysis, questionnaire survey and educational experiments were used to investigate the cognition and implementation of learning motivation of teachers and the current level of geography learning motivation of students in a Liaocheng senior high school. The main results are as follows:1.Problems in motivation enhancement of senior high school geography learning1)The following problems were found through the questionnaire survey of teachers:(1)Teachers didn’t have a good understanding of the ARCS motivation model;(2)Teachers failed to pay attention to the improvement of students’ learning motivation due to the influence of geography class time and the college entrance examination system.2)The following problems were found through the questionnaire survey of students:Students’ motivation of learning geography was at an average level.(1)On the aspect of attention, students’ enjoyment of geography subjects was an average level;students didn’t make enough effort to learn geography;teachers neglected to attract and maintain students’ attention in learning geography.(2)On the aspect of relevant, most students study geography only for the national college entrance examination;students thought that geography was less relevant to them;teachers’ teaching lacked daily life.(3)On the aspect of self-confidence,students’ self-confidence in learning geography was insufficient;students were unable to correctly attribute learning outcomes;teachers could give encouragement but couldn’t give timely guidance.(4)On the aspect of satisfaction, most students were less satisfied with the current state of geography learning;students couldn’t use the knowledge they have learned to solve practical problems;the feeling of satisfaction was greatly influenced by external factors.2.Strategies for improving senior high school students’ motivation to learn geography1)For the school and teaching research department:(1)Teachers are encouraged to attend relevant training to improve learning motivation and observe excellent teaching cases.(2)Reasonably arrange the geography class time and enrich geography test content.2)For teacher teaching:(1)Attention improvement strategies: creating a situation to stimulate students’ interest;asking questions in class to prompt students to explore geography;constantly changing teaching styles in the class to maintain students’ attention.(2)Relevant improvement strategies: connecting with real-life situations to help students establish a correct attitude towards learning geography;carrying out social practice to motivate students to connect theory with practice;reasonably select life cases, focusing on the teaching of life.(3)Self-confidence improvement strategies: reasonably adjust the difficulty of learning tasks to enhance students’ self-confidence;guiding students to correctly attribute learning outcomes to enhance motivation;giving timely guidance to solve their geography learning difficulties.(4)Satisfaction improvement strategies: a variety of evaluation methods and content are used to enhance student satisfaction;problem-based instruction are applied to give students the opportunity to use knowledge;reinforcement is given through praise and encouragement.3.Effectiveness of implementing motivation enhancement strategies for senior high school geography learningThe educational experiment revealed that the experimental class students’ motivation level and geography score were higher than the control class, verifying that the enhancement strategy can improve the motivation level and geography score.
